BROOKSVILLE The Lowman Law Firm’s initial lottery drawing to benefit Hernando County student-athletes was held Thursday at Rising Sun Bistro in Brooksville.

Hernando County High School logoAll six Hernando County high schools were represented in this year’s Lowman Law Firm Student-Athlete of the Week competition hosted by HernandoSport.com.

Parents, guests and family members accompanied 19 student-athlete winners dating back to start of the school year on Aug. 27.

Each of the 37 student-athletes recognized by HernandoSport.com were represented by a ping pong ball with an appropriate number.

All the balls were placed in a hopper before one ball was drawn out.

Joe Lowman, a partner at the Lowman Law Firm, announced that Springstead junior Tanner Kublick’s ball was selected.

As a result, F.W. Springstead Principal Carmine Rufa, who was on hand, received a donation check of $5,000 from Mr. Lowman.

“This was a great way to bring the community together,” explained Rufa, at the close of his third year at SHS. “I love the unification of the whole county. The way our economy is and with no strings attached, this (donation) is incredible.

“This allows us to purchase those extra items like shorts, T-shirts, all those little things that we didn’t have a budget for.”

Rufa admitted he’s a big fan of businesses giving back to the community they serve.

“As an administrator, you hope more businesses would follow the Lowman Law Firm lead. The amount isn’t as important as the commitment to our Hernando County students,” stressed Rufa.

In the describing HernandoSport.com’s role, “You want to see student-athletes receive exposure. It’s great for morale; it’s great for the parents, coaches, kids and fans. With a lot of student-athletes their work often goes unnoticed,” emphasized Rufa. “With the rigors of being an athlete, and keeping up with their grades, you tip your cap to this platform. These kids deserve the recognition; they’ve earned it.”

First-year SHS Athletic Director Dustin Kupcik was floored upon hearing Spingstead’s good fortune.

“To me, this is true win-win situation. Sure, Lowman Law Firm will get some great pub out of this; but it’s well worth every penny,” said Kupcik.

“To me, anytime you get a chance to recognize student-athletes on campus or on the field of play, you can’t lose. Those kids don’t get enough recognition for what they do,” admitted Kupcik. “This is an awesome platform. I appreciate the Lowman Law Firm and HernandoSport.com for providing this community service.”

On SHS’ selection as the winning recipient, “I’m very grateful especially in an era of pinching pennies,” Kupcik said. “We’re trying to get by with the best facilities we can. Getting any kind of sponsorship is much appreciated.”

Upon learning the good news, “When I heard Kublick’s ball had been selected, I was so excited,” grinned Kupcik. “Now, I have to calm down and prioritize what can we do to get best use.

“…Words can’t express how grateful I am to the Lowman Law Firm for extending their hand to us. I just wish more businesses could follow suit, in whatever way possible. To me, these kids are the future of our community,” explained Kupcik.
