The 45th FHSAA State Finals – held some five hours and 300 miles from Hernando County at Panama City Beach-Arnold High this weekend – yielded one state placer.

Of the county’s eight state qualifiers – including a county-record tying six from Springstead in Friday’s 2A Meet and two from Nature Coast Technical in Saturday’s 1A Meet – only Shark senior Logan Wellman reached the post-meet medal podium.

Logan Wellman

At unlimited, Wellman defied the odds of seven first-time qualifiers from Hernando County by returning home with a fourth-place bronze medal.

Wellman, who walked in seeded seventh, needing just to surpass one lifter to reach the medal podium, hoisted a Hernando County record 395-315710-pound total.

His previous personal record was a 700-pound pound total during the Class 1A, District 11 Meet at Bushnell-South Sumter.

In reaching the post-meet platform, Wellman tied NCT’s A.J. Fedor’s fourth-place efforts at 119 pounds in 2012 and 2011’s FHSAA State Finals.

Jesus Torres

The county’s lone returnee from last spring – NCT senior Jesus Torres – improved from last year’s ninth-place efforts to finish eighth in his 20-man bracket behind a 375-255630-pound total.

The Sharks finished tied with three other teams for 22nd-place.

As expected, Inverness-Citrus hoisted the top trophy in the 72-team field, capturing its ninth meet in nine tries in 2019 with 34.0 points.

Eagles: Blanked in 2A

Though NCT graduates both Torres and Wellman, the Eagles will return five of its six state qualifiers next spring.

In the rugged Class 2A field, SHS finished tied for 39th place with zero points.

Navarre denied Orange Park Spruce Creek its 28th FHSAA state team title by a whisker, 25.0-24.0.

Pasco County’s Sunlake High – guided by 1988 Springstead graduate Matt Smith – finished fifth overall with 14 points.

Sunlake returned home with a pair of state champs in Caleb Huff at 119 and Victor Velez at 129 pounds.

Joey McClure

For each of the six first-time state qualifying Eagles in the meet, it was a learning experience.

Juniors Hunter Weaver at 154, Joey Hopper at 183 and sophomore Zayne Barry at 199 – each finished 11th in their respective weight classes.

Senior Joey McClure at 169 placed 12th while junior Adrian Cabrera at 199 and Toby Rahman at 219 – each finished 16th in the state’s elite meet.
