BROOKSVILLE – Across seven matches, host Nature Coast Technical worked its mojo into a first-place tie with heavy favorites Venice and Palm Harbor University during the Combs Duals III.

The Venice Indians, however, earned some breathing room solving the three-time defending tourney champions from PHU, 35-24.

The Indians followed by knocking NCT off its unbeaten perch behind a resounding 68-9 nod.

In the 1A-6 Sharks’ last match, with three starters out with injuries, the Brooksville grapplers were no match for 3A-7 PHU losing 66-15.

As a result, for the third time in four meets this winter the 2A-10 Venice Indians left with a championship trophy.

Besides capturing the Weeki Wachee Duals III title, Coach Dan Kelly’s Indians claimed the Southside Duals in Boca Ciega before going 9-0 in the two-day, 10-team event.

VHS was paced by Brent Smallwood, Zack Kelly, Luke Viegel and Nick Vischulis, who all finished 9-0.

Coaches’ corner

“We have a lot of high hopes for this team. We knew it would be close against Palm Harbor,” explained Coach Kelly. “There were a lot of interesting match-ups. It came down to we didn’t get pinned.”

The Pinellas County-based Hurricanes finished 8-1 overall led by PHU twins Connor and Jared Prince, who combined to go 18-0.

For his efforts mostly at 138, Connor Price was feted as the meet’s Outstanding Lightweight  Wrestler while NCT junior Anthony Contegiacomo earned the same honor for heavyweights at 220 pounds.

“They (Venice) have a senior-laden team,” described seventh-year PHU skipper Brad Sakevich. “The biggest positive was finishing in second with as many young guys as we have.

“Our 220-pounder could have really us but he was at an all-star football game,” added Sakevich. “If this team were a little older I’d be disappointed, but I’m not. I’d give us a “B” for the tournament – there’s room for improvement.”

On the bright side, NCT’s 16 grapplers combined for 64 victories in 87 bouts (81 percent).

Contegiacomo and senior Mark Espinosa also finished 9-0. The duo combined for 12 pins.

“It was a semi-hard tournament,” described the 17-year-old Contegiacomo, who returned to the mats in fine shape after defaulting last Saturday, snapping his career-best 17-match win skein at the Springstead Invitational. “Last week was horrible. Today, I felt like I used to be.

“My toughest opponent was the Weeki Wachee kid (Anthony Hartman),” indicated the 2014 state qualifier. “He put up the best fight (a 13-4 major decision).”

Like Contegiacomo, Espinosa bounced back after missing the Springstead Invite.

“I felt pretty good today,” smiled the 17-year-old Espinosa, a 2014 state qualifier. “My best match was beating the No. 5 kid in the state (PHU’s Joe Capone, 3-1). I felt like I wrestled at the top of my game.”

Senior Le’Shaun Gray at 170 (7-0) and junior Deshawn Smith (7-2) each collected seven wins.

Gray (wrist), Greg Lau (sore back) and Frank Ritchie (possible broken ankle) were all held out of action late in the tournament. Gray and Lau will be day-to-day next week. Another starter, junior Kyle Schaefer, never competed, fighting a flu bug.

According to Coach Lastra that wasn’t all.

After senior starter Jessie Trubic at 113 pounds, was pinned in his opening match by his Sunlake opponent on Friday, texted Lastra while the tourney was going on indicating he quit the team.

“We had a lot of positives this weekend up to the end,“ indicated Lastra, whose team left 14-3 overall. “Venice is a great dual team, probably one of the best I’ve seen. They have no real weak spots in their lineup.”

Lastra indicated NCT will get another crack at PHU in a month.

“Had we had a full lineup, we could’ve given Palm Harbor a much better match,” pointed out Lastra. “We had too many starters out, even if they were precautionary. To go 7-2 with as many holes in the lineup as we had is pretty good.”

Lastra praised Contegiacomo and Espinosa, “For both of them bouncing back from last week. And we also got a huge lift from Keegan (Davis, who finished 6-2). He surprised a lot of people.”

WWHS: Fourth

For a second straight weekend, the fourth-year Weeki Wachee Hornets placed fourth.

After a tough 2-3 start on Friday, WWHS blazed a 4-0 Saturday to finish with momentum at 6-3.

In the process, the Hornets captured 68 of its 108 matches (63 percent), behind 34 pins.

Junior Dean Brooks, a transfer from NCT, paced WWHS with a perfect 9-0 slate, featuring six pins at 285.

Three others, including senior Derek Wood at 106 pounds, sophomore Hunter Gibson at 120 and junior Brandon Enoch at 132/138, all finished 8-1.

“We had a good tournament,” detailed fourth-year skipper Joe Felice. “We started on the tough end of the bracket, but we made our way to Saturday. We even beat a team we’ve never beaten before (Crystal River).”

On his grapplers’ evaluations, “Brooks did what he’s supposed to do,” described Felice. “And I thought Enoch wrestled well, too. After our top five guys, we’ve got to get the other guys in the room to follow the leaders. I thought we did a much better job this weekend of finishing what we started.“
