Gates, carried the Sharks to second straight 5A-7 title and its first-ever regional home playoff victory over Orlando-Lake Highland Prep, threw six solid innings in falling to perennially-tough Orlando-Bishop Moore Catholic during the Class 5A, Region II semifinal in Orange County, 2-1.

J.P., the 2016 Hernando County Player of the Year, led the all Hernando County batters with a .478 batting average, was responsible for Sharks’ lone run against Bishop Moore behind his personal record 10th homer of the season. Coincidentally, the round-tripper served as his 100th career hit in 76th prep game.

Gates, who carries a 3.0 grade point average in the commercial arts cluster, has volunteered over the past few seasons as coach for the War Hawks, a 10-12-year-old youth baseball program.
