Eleven of the 20 member schools from Pasco and Hernando counties met at Wiregrass Ranch High in Wesley Chapel to select its 2017 Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) District 10 Football All-Star teams.

Florida Athletic Coaches Association

Only Anclote, Sunlake, Land O’ Lakes, Fivay, Hudson, Wiregrass Ranch, Zephyrhills, Central, Hernando, Springstead and Weeki Wachee were represented in the recent two-hour meeting.

Two of the area’s better programs, Mitchell and Nature Coast Technical, weren’t present. As a result, none of their players were nominated.

Any of the senior players named are eligible to be chosen for the Saturday, Dec. 16, 63rd annual North/South All-Star Classic at The Villages.

Participating coaches voted on two all-star squads beginning with the All-District Senior Team.

The assembled mentors also voted on the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Besides a Senior District 10 squad, the selection of the All-District 10 Team, which includes underclassmen, took place.

Each all-star squad was 26 allotted positions (including 13 players on offense, 13 on defense) as only the top vote getters were honored.

Harrison rules

District 10’s Player of the Year has Hernando County roots.

Charles Harrison III

Zephyrhills senior quarterback Charles Harrison III played for the Parrott Leopards. He’ll guide the Bulldogs to their straight regional appearance on Nov. 10.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder has rushed 64 times for 523 yards and tallied five touchdowns leading the Orange and Black to the Class 5A, District 8 championship behind a current 8-1 ledger.

Through the air, the southpaw has clicked on 83-of-147 for 1,754 yards and 27 touchdowns against five interceptions.

Leopards: Four choices

Hernando High (7-1) was represented by senior offensive lineman Collin Roberts, defensive lineman Ja’Vaughn Dorsey, wide receiver Ygenio Booker and strong safety Josh Vonada.

On the 5-foot-11, 215-pound Roberts, “Collin is a four-year player and three-year starter. He’s a very unselfish player. He’s a two-year starter for us on defense, before moving over on offense. Despite the transition, he became our best offensive lineman,” explained fourth-year skipper Bill Vonada.

“His biggest strengths include how well he comes off the ball and how he’s a lunch pail guy. He shows up every day and does his job.”

JaVaughn Dorsey

On the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Dorsey, “He’s pretty explosive … Has one of the best motors on the team … When he’s on special teams, he rolls through people … The best thing about him is what you see in practice, is what you get during a game … He wants to be on the field … Gives a 100 percent on every play; doesn’t take plays off.”

Ygenio Booker                              Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

On the 5-foot-11, 192-pound Booker, “He’s a huge big-play threat … Everyone knows about his sprinter’s speed … Doesn’t get a lot of touches, but makes each one count … His effort, his speed and his tenacity helps spring the other guys on the team.”

Josh Vonada

On his son, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Josh Vonada, who leads the county in interceptions (4), “Josh is another lunch pail guy … Probably studies film as much as anybody on the team … Knows exactly where guys need to be lined up at … Plays at a higher percentage of his speed … He knows where he needs to be on every play … Has never missed a practice and plays hard every snap.”

Four Eagles picked

The 6-3 Springstead Eagles were represented by a trio of seniors: 6-foot, 294-pound center Cory Fulkerson, 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive tackle Kyle Manuel and 6-foot, 190-pound fullback Randy Morgan along with the 5-foot-11, 183-pound sophomore linebacker Adrian Cabrera on the FACA District 10 Team that includes undergraduates.

Morgan, the seventh SHS back to ever eclipse 1,000 yards, was also feted as the District 10’s Class 6A Player of the Year. He finished third in the balloting as district’s overall MVP.

Fifth-year skipper Mike Garofano, who was feted as District 10’s 6A Coach of the Year, highly endorsed each pick.

“Morgan has been waiting his turn. Last year, Demetrius Barry earned the lion’s share of the carries. Now it’s Randy’s year … When we need it, he gets us going … Randy has great vision, great acceleration, never misses a workout of any kind and is the face of the franchise … He is absolutely deserving of any recognition he receives … The great asset? He never complains and never takes short cuts.”

Vonada added, “He does everything … He’s tailor-made for the (fullback) position… Is a threat to go the distance on any snap.”

Cory Fulkerson

On Fulkerson, “Every one of our plays starts with Cory’s hands around the football … He needs no help against the nose guard in a three-technique … He’s got a ton of pancake blocks … He’s constantly in the weight room getting bigger and stronger … He wasn’t feeling well last week prior to playing Pasco. He kept vomiting, but he’s a trooper and still played hard … Has been our anchor up front for the past three years … He’s the kind of kid that leads the others by example … Another guy who makes no excuses and shows up every day.”

Kyle Manuel

On Manuel, “He’s one of the most technically sound players on the team … He’s played both sides of the ball well … He’s so bright, he knows where guys are supposed to be lined up … He wasn’t an O-line starter originally, we’ve gradually eased him into it at right tackle … Great kid off the field, a 4.0 kid in the classroom … He’s someone who works his butt off … He’s one of the last guys to leave the weight room … I see a bright future for him at the next level … Model student/athlete – he’s what Springstead football is all about: high class, high character.”

Adrian Cabrera

On Cabrera, “I thought Coach Browning said it best, “No. 1 is a tremendous football player” … The kid’s a beast … When you look at him on film, he stands out every game … He puts running backs, quarterbacks, anybody on their backs … He’s so intense and physical … Greatest assets? Include his attitude, his physicality, just slightly over his intensity … In practice, we have some battles against the first-team offense; sometimes we have throttle him back.”

Four Bears chosen

Though Central High finished 2-7, four Bears were selected including three seniors: 6-foot-7, 296-pound right tackle Lynndell Hudson, 6-foot-2, 210-pound tight end Jonathan Allion and 5-foot-11, 215-pound defensive lineman Joshua Turner along with sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Brown on the All-District 10 Team that includes underclassmen.

Fourth-year CHS mentor Chris Sands believed all four deserved recognition.

Jonathon Allion Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

On Allion, “Jon has true talent as a tight end …He runs crisp routes, can block at the point of attack, and has some serious ball skills … He will be a interesting player at the next level … He’s a tweener … Will probably be an H-Back … Has been offered multiple FCS offers.”

Lynndell Hudson

On Hudson, “Lyndell has transformed his body to be ready to play ASAP at the next level … Lost 60 pounds this off season … Extremely hard worker and is motivated to be successful … The sky is the limit for him … Multiple FBS offers … It will be a fun recruiting process these next few months.”

Josh Turner

On Turner, “Josh is one of the best “football players” that I’ve ever coached … He is hard nosed and any coach would love to have him in their program … He never came off the field for us … Has multiple D2 offers as a fullback … Plays with intensity and was the leader of our team … He will be truly missed in our program.”

Isaiah Brown

On Brown “Zay is special … One of the most talented kids I have ever coached and he’s only a sophomore … At 15 years old, I’ve never seen a wide receiver this polished … Has soft hands and competes for the ball … FBS programs have been calling off the hook for him … It will be a exciting to watch him perform the next two years … Already holds most of the Hernando County single-season receiving records.”

WWHS’ Young

The 2-6 Hornets are represented by 6-foot, 160-pound wide receiver Shaun Young.

Shaun Young

On Young, “His numbers have been really good,” explained first-year mentor Jacob Gray. “He’s been an all-round team player. He’s filled in at cornerback and had a huge pick to seal the win against Central. His body of work to date was enough to put him on this team. The kid is no prima donna … His biggest strength? He catches everything. I don’t think he’s had a drop … Next year, I see him as a Division I-AA guy … He’s completely bought into the program and has never missed a practice.”
