SPRING HILL – F.W. Springstead followed an all-too-familiar blue print for its 12th Hernando County boys weightlifting crown.

For years, 16th-year Eagle mentor Mike Garofano has preached to win a meet this big, his squad need to be at full force, have no scratches and max out on its number of individual champions.

Competing at home, Garofano arrived with 14 lifters – one below the maximum permitted for this meet – and all 14 scored points.

Perhaps just as important, the Spring Hill crew executed bringing home a meet-high five champions – out of 10 weight divisions and rolled up four second-place finishes to repeat as Hernando County champions.

SHS finished with 71 points – or 12 more than runner-up Hernando (59.0).

Central finished in a tie for third place with Nature Coast Technical with 29 points while Weeki Wachee placed fifth with five points.

Every team minus the short-handed Hornets – who arrived with only one lifter – departed with at least one county champion.

Central’s champ featured John Carbone at 119 pounds while Hernando’s titlists included Lex Garcia at 129 and Caleb Adams at 139.

NCT seniors Jesus Torres at 219 and Logan Wellman at heavyweight each repeated as county champions.

Eagles crown five

Host Springstead’s five champions included sophomore Zayne Barry at 199, juniors Hunter Weaver at 154, Joey Hopper at 183 and Toby Rahman at 238, as well as senior Joey McClure at 169.

Securing critical second-place points included juniors Dylan Campani at 154, Robert Carroll at 199 and Adrian Cabrera at 219 along with senior Michael Brown at 183.

Coaches’ corner

In claiming Springstead’s 12th lifetime heavy metal county crown, Coach Garofano savored his 11th.

Mike Garofano

“It was a good day,” analyzed Garofano. “We got first and second in couple weight classes which really helped. Those are big points.

In identifying the keys to success, “We followed the old script. We brought 14 and every body scored points without having anyone scratch out,” noted Garofano.

“The field was pretty competitive with Hernando. Weeki Wachee was down but Nature Coast and Central both had good lifters.

“There really weren’t any surprises,” added Garofano. “I thought we’d win 154, 169 and 183. As a whole, we lifted well as a team. It was a big day for us. With the kids we have coming back, we could be even stronger next year.”

Eagles notch three repeat champs

Of the meet’s five individual repeat champs, three were Eagles including: Weaver, Barry and McClure.

Three-time champ: Weaver

Weaver collected his fourth individual win in five tries this season. His only setback was a 10-pound loss to Lecanto‘s Shane Thornton on Feb. 27.

After winning the county meet in 2017 on a tie-breaker, Weaver bested Weeki Wachee’s Nick Pasmore by 35 pounds last winter.

Hunter Weaver

This time, Weaver topped runner-up Campani by 80 pounds, 520-440.

“I felt pretty good,” recalled Weaver, 17. “But the competition wasn’t great. I PR’ed on my bench (280 pounds).

“I was looking for a 535 total. I settled for a 520,” added Weaver, a two-time All-County lifter. “I would’ve gotten a PR had I gotten my last clean-and-jerk.”

On his goal for the 2A-6 Tourney at Lecanto, “I’m looking for a 545 total and a 285 on my bench,” predicted Weaver. “My toughest county meet had to be when I was a freshman. I had to hit my last lift to tie.”

Barry clinches fifth victory

For the second-year Barry, his fifth meet of the season translated into his team-best fifth straight win.

Zayne Barry

Like Weaver, Barry had to hit his last lift in last year’s county meet to win thanks to a tie-breaker.

This time, he bested his teammate, Carroll, 560-430.

“It was harder to win last year,” revealed Barry, 17. “Last year, there were a lot more lifters. This year, there were only three.”

Asked to describe his day, “I had a good day,“ beamed Barry. “I PR’ed in my bench. cleans, and total. I’d give myself a “B” – probably because the competition just wasn’t there like before.”

Aiming for districts in Citrus County, “I’d like to get a 535 on my bench, including a 250 in my cleans,” projected Barry.

McClure pockets season’s second win

Prior to the county meet, McClure had settled for second place in three of the four meets he competed in.

Joey McClure

After winning the county meet last winter over teammate Isaiah Howard, 475-455, this time McClure topped Central‘s Logan Hickey by 35 pounds, 495-460.

“It was harder to win last year,” expressed McClure, 18. “There was more competition.

“This time, I had a really good day. I got a PR in my cleans (215). I tried 290 with the bench and got it off my chest, but I couldn’t lock it out.”

Looking ahead to the post-season, “I’d like to get between a 290-295 in my bench at districts and between a 220-225 total in my power cleans.”

Reviewing his efforts, “I’d give myself a “B” – I know I could’ve done better. I had more in me,” he added.

Rahman, Hopper: First-time champs

Both Rahman and Hopper were first-time champs for the Eagles.

Toby Rahman

After losing to Hernando senior Colin Pagels by 60 pounds last winter at 219 pounds, 550-490, Rahman solved his closest rival, HHS senior Israel “Izzy” Fields by 30 pounds, 535-505.

The win served as Rahman’s third of the season. He finished third against Lecanto and at Sunlake.

“I had a pretty easy day,” smiled Rahman, 17. “The weight class was pretty open. It wasn’t that close.”

Asked to evaluate his efforts, “I had a better day on my bench. I remember missing my third bench attempt. I only got my first clean; I missed the last two.

“Overall? I’d give myself a “B”. My goal for districts is a 315 on my bench and to just improve on my cleans and get a PR. That’s really all you can do,” added Rahman. “I’m trying to do everything thing I can to get to states.”

Joey Hopper

For Hopper, his magical season continues.

The county meet victory was team-best fifth of the season – tying him with Barry.

He topped his teammate, Michael Brown, by 25 pounds for the title, 530-505.

“I love winning: I don’t want it to stop,” expressed Hopper, 17. “I could’ve done better, but I missed my last clean.

“I just couldn’t finish my last clean (230 pounds),” added Hopper. “At districts, I want to get all six of my lifts. I’m probably looking at a 310 bench, 230 on my cleans for a 540 total. That’s the goal.”

Leopards add two champs

Caleb Adams

Hernando High added 24th and 25th lifetime county champs in sophomore Lex Garcia at 129 and junior Caleb Adams at 139.

Both were first-time county champions.

Garcia bested his closest rival, NCT’s Tae Tae Williams, 275-260.

Adams, who finished third at 129 last winter with a 325-pound total, topped Weeki Wachee sophomore Omari Forde, 395-370.

Sharks: two repeat victors

Jesus Torres

Nature Coast Technical produced its 17th and 18th individual county crowns behind a pair of veteran lifters in seniors Jesus Torres and Logan Wellman.

Logan Wellman

Last winter, Wellman’s 595-pound total out-distanced Hernando High’s Max Pringle’s 575-pound efforts.

This time, Wellman again solved Pringle, behind a meet-high 680-pound total by 65 pounds.

Last winter, Torres’ 590-pound total topped teammate Willie Coffey’s 565-pound total.

This time, Torres topped Springstead’s Adrian Cabrera, 595-550.

Bears’ Carbone garners gold

At 119, Central’s John Carbone bested Hernando’s Alex Roberts for the top of the podium, 295-250.

Carbone’s crown serves as the Bears’ 39th lifetime gold medal in this event.
