Surely, but slowly the young and inexperienced Nature Coast Technical mat team is progressing.

Behind a season-high 11 wrestlers in Manatee County, the Sharks returned home Saturday night with its best-ever efforts – placing sixth in the one-day, 18-team, 169-wrestler Palmetto Pride IBT.

2A-8 powerhouse Brandon High nearly lapped the assembled field with 313.0 points, besting its closest rival, 2A-9 St. Petersburg-Dixie Hollins by 131.5 points.

The Sharks, who don’t have a senior in its starting lineup, placed sixth overall with 101.0 points.

Moreover, second-year Chance Phillips’ squad returned to Hernando County with seven top-six placers.

Overall, the Brooksville mat men pocketed 18 wins across 35 bouts (51 percent), highlighted by 14 pin falls.

Dominguez leads the way

Jonathan Dominguez

Sophomore Jonathan Dominguez at 113 pounds set the pace with a perfect 3-0 weekend featuring three pins to earn NCT’s first gold medal in any IBT event this winter.

As the No. 2 seed, Dominguez opened the meet with a first-round bye before flattening Sarasota-Booker frosh Madison Beausoleil in 34 seconds..

In the semis, Dominguez pinned Southeast’s Cedric Rentz in 3:28 to earn his finals berth.

In the finals, he overwhelmed Brandon freshman Darrell Tabor in 26 ticks to reach the top of the podium.

With the win, Dominguez improved to 25-6 overall.

Jaxson Morris

Though no other Shark reached the finals, junior Jaxson Morris – at his new home at 132 – finished 3-1 overall with two pins to place third.

Sophomore Billy Fetzner at 138 placed fourth while sophomores Aaron Gentz at 126 and Chris Spellman at 182 – each placed fifth.

Spellman matched Dominguez’s pin total with three falls.

Junior heavyweight Michael Marotta and sophomore Tristan Paneson at 170 – each placed sixth.

Shark analysis

Reviewing the event, Coach Phillips was impressed with Brandon.

Chance Phillips

“They’re still very good. They have almost the top seed in every weight class this weekend,” noted Phillips.

In evaluating the Sharks, “Based on this weekend, we’re definitely progressing. We won the matches we were suppose to win.”

On Dominguez, “Jonathan wrestled extremely well. In the finals, he put it on the Brandon kid. He just overwhelmed the kid,” said Phillips.

“…I thought Jaxson looked really good, too. I thought he’d do well at 132. He’s proving me right. With a guy like Aaron (Gentz), you can see his confidence growing, too.”

On the team placing sixth, “I’m okay with sixth,” said the two-time Georgia state qualifier. “I can only remember us losing three winnable matches. With all the guys that placed, this what we’ve been striving for.”

What’s ahead?

Coach Phillips was on the fence at which event he’d take the Sharks this weekend: either the rugged two-day, Lake Gibson IBT in Lakeland or compete in the Logan Kushner Duals at Palm Harbor-University.
