In its longest road trip in eight winters, Weeki Wachee returned from this weekend’s trip north along US-19 to Crawfordville, finishing third in the Wakulla Invitational.

The weekend began on Friday when the Hornets competed in a dual meet at Wakulla High against Tallahassee-Chiles.

The Hornets (30-6 overall) posted wins in nine of 14 bouts to solve Chiles, 54-25.

In Saturday’s ensuing one-day, 19-team, 174-wrestler event, the host 1A-2 Eagles demonstrated why they’re one of the premier teams in 1A collecting 338.5 points.

2A-1 Fort Walton Beach was a distant second with 135.5 points while 1A-6 Weeki Wachee finished third.

The Hornets, who utilized 13 grapplers in the varsity tournament and another seven in the junior varsity event in the school’s cafeteria.

WWHS’ varsity posted a 23-23 overall mark, which featured 21 pin falls.

Six Hornets placed among the top six of the 14 weight divisions.

The US-19 grapplers were led by seniors Jason Schmidt at 195 pounds and Jahikye Facey at 285, who both reached the IBT (individually bracketed tournament) finals, but settled on silver medals.

Freshman Lane Beck at 120 and sophomore Keith Germain at 106 placed fourth.

Brian Strickland

Senior Brian Strickland, at 170 pounds, placed fifth while frosh Dominic Scaffedi at 113 placed sixth.

Strickland returned with a team-best 4-1 run, highlighted by four pin falls.

Facey was right behind at 3-1 with three pins.

Schmidt, Facey in the finals

Jason Schmidt

Schmidt, who was seeded third, enjoyed a first-round bye.

He opened with back-to-back pins over Fort Walton Beach‘s Patrick Adams and Bishop Snyder’s Tommy Graden.

In the finals, Schmidt fell victim to Wakulla junior John Hinsey via a 16-0 technical fall.

Hinsey, a 2018 1A-2 district champion, qualified for states last year finishing 1-2 overall.

Facey began his journey with three straight wins as the No. 2 seed.

He pinned Fort Walton Beach’s Luther Fagalima before decision Marianna’s Roosevelt Williams, 2-0.

In the semifinals, he pinned The Villages’ Josh Graham to reach the finals against top-seeded Darius Wilkins of Wakulla.

Wilkins, a senior, won districts last winter, finished as a regional runner-up, and finished 2-2 at states.

In the finals, Wilkins (43-2) stuck Facey (30-10).

Coaches’ corner

Third-year WWHS mentor Dan Gigantelli believed the combination of a long road trip and facing a rugged Wakulla squad led to a tough weekend.

Dan Gigantelli

“Top to bottom, Wakulla is good. We’ve faced Hernando. If Wakulla dueled them, they’d win, but it would be close.

“Hernando is a little better in the middle weights but Wakulla is a little stronger in the lower and heavier weights.”

“It was nice to see so many different teams,” noted Gigantelli, as 15 of the participating schools were 1A programs.

In reviewing the weekend, “I thought our kids just ran out of gas,” explained Gigantelli. “And some of our guys didn’t wrestle well late in the day.

“To me, this was a learning experience. Take a kid like Deacon (Straube). He was beating a kid, 10-0. But he wasn‘t playing attention to the situation, got rolled and got pinned. These are mistakes young wrestlers make. It’s all part of growing up on the mats.”

On who stood out, “Both Schmidt and Facey wrestled fantastic,” stressed the WWHS mentor. “Even though they both lost. It gives them something to build on. It’ll help when the matches really matter.”

On returning home in third, “I’m okay with it,” shared Gigantelli. “We knew Wakulla was going to run away with it and we went back and forth with Fort Walton Beach for second. Sure, I wish we could’ve finished a little stronger.“

Looking ahead

WWHS will entertain New Port Richey-Mitchell on Senior Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
