COMMENTS: Four-year starter … Foir-time All-Hernando County pick … Impressive debut as a frosh for the Central Bears … At 5-foot-10, was the No. 1 offensive threat for the thin-rostered Lady Bears … Corbett finished second in the county in scoring behind Springstead center Alyssa Clifton at 12.9 points per game … Also, finished second in three-point shooting, draining 39 treys … She ranked third in the county in blocked shots (1.35 per game). … In Year 2, Corbett missed four games due to an ankle injury … Finished third in the county in scoring at 15.4 points per game … Pumped in a county-leading 63 treys … After scoring 20-plus points four times as a freshman, Corbett scored above 20 points five times in 2016-17 … She tied her career best of 26 markers in the Jan. 23, 2017’s 56-51 win over Springstead … Enjoyed a fine campaign pacing the Hornets to a school record 25-3 2017-18 season … She led the team in games played (28), field goals (159), free throws made (60), free throw percentage (.706), points scored (421) and points per game average (15.0) … Ranked second on the team in three-pointers (43) … Surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau as a junior … Tremendous senior campaign m 2018-19… Led the local circuit in games played (31), three-pointers converted (83), poured in a league-leading 464 points … Finished as the county‘s No, 2 scorer behind by Hernando High’s Nakayla Roberts … Finished second in converting field goals (164) … Ranked as the county’s third-best foul shooter at 67 percent ,,, Averaged over four rebounds per game per her career

QUOTE: “Mykenna can shoot the ball … Has a great basketball IQ … When she arrived at Weeki Wachee. we had two established players, she learned to gain their confidence and trust …She could shoot the ball so well, there were times, she just took over games … Was a good passer, too … She helped round out our squad … Her size complimented her skill level … She could go inside … Gave people match-up problems in the paint … She gave us balance – thanks to tremendous her outside shooting ability.”

– Weeki Wachee’s Mike Munro

Lonnie White

QUOTE: “She’s the type of player that exudes confidence … She‘s fundamentally sound and extremely consistent on the floor … There’s no role that bothers her … She‘s a better shooter, but she can handle the ball, too.”

Ex-Springstead skpper Lonnie White

Emily Gore

QUOTE: “She’s a great guard … She can shoot around the rim … Their offense was centered around here … If she didn’t finish any shots, Seytia (Hill) would clean up the misses … Even if you slow here down, she can shoot over most of the kids we had guarding her …We threw the a diamond-and-one, everything at her and she handled it with ease … You don’t have those type of conditioned athletes with that kind of stamina necessary to stay with her … Her skill set translates well to the next level.”

– Nature Coast Technical’s Emily Gore

QUOTE: “You can’t argue with the results … She was their leader … They got the job done reaching the Final Four … She deserves it (POY).”

HCA’s Mike Drummond

Dominique Jacobs

QUOTE: “She’s the type of player that sparks the game up … When she got hot, they got their way … To me, her tenacity really got them rolling.”

Hernando Dominique Jacobs

Guard – Morgan McDaniel

Weeki Wachee – Sophomore

Morgan McDaniel

COMMENTS: Second-year letter winner … First full season as a starter … Initial All-Hernando County pick … Came off the bench to finish Year 1 as the Hornets’ fifth-leading scorer at 4.21 points per game … Doubled her production in Year 2 … Played in a county-best 31 games as the team’s point guard … Finished as the team’s No. 4 scorer at 8.45 ppg …Shot 64 percent from the foul line and finished second on the team in three-pointers (14) …. Possesses great court vision … Led the county with 178 total assists … Edged out NCT’s Angelis Diaz for the assist leader behind 5.7 assists per game.

QUOTE: “Elevated her game this season… She shredded Crystal River’s (press) defense real well … She not only handles the ball well, but she can shoot it, too… Next year, she’s gonna have exhibit some tremendous leadership after all these seniors leave …You know with so many of the supporting pieces gone, more people will be going after us …She’ll get her points and she was Class 6A’s second-best player in assists this year … Overall, we’re gonna have a lot more closer games.”

– Munro

Guard – Danielle Crima

Nature Coast Technical – Senior

Nature Coast’s Danielle Crima attempts a free throw. Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

COMMENTS: Fourth-year player … Initial All-County selection … The 5-foot-5 perimeter shooter didn’t score a point in limited play as a freshman … As a sophomore, she broke in averaging 3.7 pg … Began to make a name for herself as a junior in 2017-18 … She raised her scoring average to second on the club at 7.83 ppg … She paced the Sharks from beyond the arc with 52 triples … When center Kayla Langley transferred from NCT prior to last season that left a huge scoring void (22.3) to fill … Crima did her part behind a career-best 12.0 scoring average.

QUOTE: “When we lost 500 points, we had to reevaluate our offensive goals … We figured we needed to make six threes a game to keep teams honest … I thought Danielle had a great season …She started getting used to seeing the ball more … She never missed practice for us … Was voted our team’s offensive player of the year … I’m gonna miss not having someone who could make a three … It looks like we’re gonna go back to having an inside presence in the paint … But if teams are packing it in on us, who can we release the ball to outside?”

Gore

Forward – Nakayla Roberts

Hernando – Senior

Nakayla Roberts

COMMENTS: One of the premier multi-sport student-athletes in Hernando County … Also played volleyball, softball and participated in track & field … Repeated as an All-County performer in hoops … How talented is 5-foot-6 Roberts? She’s been named All-County in basketball, softball and track … Broke in as a freshman in 2015-16, playing in 20 games averaging a fine 8.70 points per game … In Year 2, across 24 tilts, she improved to 10.1 points per game … Tremendous third campaign … After her first four games of the season, the ultra-quick Roberts averaged 28 points per game … She ended up etching 16 double-figure scoring efforts across 21 games … She ranked second in the county in points scored (415) and scoring average (19.8) … Set a personal record with 35 points against Central High … Needed only 169 markers to reach 1,000 points scored for her prep career … In 2018-19, Roberts played in 22 games and averaged a county-leading 20.2 points per game … Only POY Mykenna Corbett of Weeki Wachee scored more points than Roberts … Led the county with 214 converted field goals …. Pumped in a season-high 31 points against Citrus and South Sumter.

QUOTE: “Overall, she was a workhorse … Everything in her game starts with her heart … She’s a go-getter … She’s perfect for a Nike commercial: Just do it … I’m gonna miss everything she brings to the table … Having fun on the court was a reminder that this is supposed to be a fun game.”

– Jacobs

Forward – Shayleese “Mama” Vazquez

Weeki Wachee – Senior

COMMENTS: Rare four-year starter … Three-time All-County pick … The 5-foot-10 Vasquez is known for her long arms and feathery jump shot … Posed problems on both ends of the courts for opposing teams … Broke in as a freshman in 2015-16 averaging 6.81 points per game … A year later, she averaged a double-double per game: hitting 10.8 points per game and 10 rebounds per game … Her career-best effort of 26 points arrived in the regional quarterfinal at Holiday, as the Hornets ousted Anclote on Feb. 9, 65-50. … Vasquez also finished second in the county in blocked shots at 1.77 per game behind NCT’s Langley’s 2.77 blocks per game. … In her finest hour, Vasquez recorded a rare triple-double against visiting Hernando on Nov. 29’s 33-25 win behind 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals … In Year 3, Vazquez ranked seventh in the county in scoring (11.8) and averaged just under 10 rebounds per game … Behind 61 blocks, she ranked second in the local circuit at 2.18 blocks per game … Talk about consistency, she recorded 18 games in double-figure scoring and 18 games with 10-plus rebounds …Splendid senior campaign … Returned to averaging a double-double per game …Pumped in 12.5 points per game and grabbed an average of 10.1 rebounds per game … Reached the coveted 1,000-point and 1,000-rebound plateau … Besides finishing seventh in the county in scoring and second in rebounding (to teammate Seytia Hill), she led the local circuit in blocked shots (93) and blocks per game (2.9) … Se enhanced her defense ranking third locally in steals at 2.9 per game.

QUOTE: “Mama had dangerous mid-range jumper and could shoot a three-ball … She was more valuable to us in the paint … She had a knack to go up and get rebounds … Defensively, she changed shots by being so much of a shot blocker … I wish I had kept the stat for how many times she blocked a shot, grabbed it out of the air and turned it into two points on the other end … She improved each year she played … Demonstrated good judgment and never freaked out on the court as our primary inbounds passer … With her gone, were gonna have to work on getting back on defense – which she always did – and working on our inbounds passing game … Headed to small school in Iowa – Central College – … They’re getting a good one.”

Munro

Center – Seytia Hill

Weeki Wachee – Senior

Seytia Hill

COMMENTS: Rare four-year starter … Four-time All-County hoops selection … Versatile and extremely gifted athlete … Also a three-time All-County pick in volleyball (2016-18) and two-time track & field all-star (2017, 2019) … Inherited terrific DNA … Father was an all-around athlete and a feared four-time state placer and two-time state wrestling champion: Corey Hill from Springstead, who tragically passed away in Tampa in 2015 … In 2015-16 as a freshman, Hill played volleyball, basketball and placed seventh in the FHSAA Track and Field Class 2A State Finals in Bradenton in the discus … As a first-year hoopster, the game wasn’t too fast for her as she averaged 7.23 points per game and 9.08 rebounds per game. … As a sophomore in 2016-17, the 5-foot-10 Hill finished second in the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg, swishing 20-plus points twice including a career-best 21 markers in the 5A-7 final 48-43 loss to Crystal River at Weeki Wachee … Hill paced all Hernando County cagers with 333 caroms finishing second overall averaging 11.1 rebounds per game to NCT‘s Kayla Langley’s 11.8 … In 2017-18. Hill ranked ninth in the county in scoring (11.2), hauled down a circuit-leading 370 rebounds, averaging 13.2 boards per game … Hauled down 10 or more rebounds 21 times last winter … Scored 10 or more points 17 times … Will not give an inch under the basket … Amazing senior season in 2018-19 … Continued to average a double-double per game … Finished as the county’s sixth-best scorer at 13.0 ppg …Led the circuit in rebounding (334), averaging 10.8 caroms per game … As a result, Hill became the first WWHS female hoopster to rake in over 1,000 career points along side collecting 1,000 career rebounds … Defensively, she finished fourth in the county in steals (2.0 per game) … Signed with Pasco-Hernando State College in New Port Rickey to play volleyball.

QUOTE: “Skill-wise, she’s right up there … She’s developed a high basketball IQ … She picked up the game at an early age … She’s extremely tenacious … I cannot ever remember seeing someone collect over 200 more offensive rebounds than defensive boards … She’s extremely smart and knows where to be to get rebounds … Had a lot of steals, too … That demonstrates her work ethic on both ends of the floor … What I like most? That she’s willing to be coached … As a coach at the next level, there’s no worries about her academically … I don’t know when we’ll ever replace someone like Seytia. Players like her, don’t come around very often.”

– Munro

Utility – Amelia “Milly” Jackson

Hernando Christian Academy – Senior

Milly Jackson

COMMENTS: Five-year letter winner ,,, Repeat All-County cager … As an eighth-grader in 2014-15, Jackson paced the Lady Lions in rebounding at 6.4 per games, averaged 6.4 points per game and led the squad in steals (3.7 spg) … In Year 2, she upped her production to 7.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg … In 2016-17, she participated in a career-high 25 games and poured in a personal record 261 points and averaging 10.4 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game … Pumped a career high 24 markers against First Academy … Last winter, she played in 18 games due to injury … Tallied 210 points averaging 11.7 ppg … Nearly duplicated her personal record of 12 double digit games with 11 (year before she recorded 12) … Ranked eighth in the county in scoring, second in steals (4.33) and fourth in assists (3.22 apg) … Through 81 career tilts on the Emerson Road campus, she’s tallied 745 points … Needs 255 to reach 1,000 … Has averaged 9.20 ppg in her career and has chipped in 33 games finishing in double figures … Helped guide the Lady Lions to 22-4 in 2018-19 = A victory away from achieving the Final Four in Lakeland in Class 2A … Played in all 26 tilts … Led the Brooksville club in scoring at 13.4 ppg … She ranked fourth in the county in scoring … Finished fourth in the county in assists at 3.1 per game … Tallied a personal-best 23 points against always-tough Lecanto-Seven Rivers Christian.

QUOTE: “Milly was the unsung hero of our team … She’s filled in where ever we needed her to play … There aren’t many girls able to handle that … She’s so bright … She was like another coach on the floor … She finished her career with 1,000 career points … This was her best season … After we graduated some leaders, Milly knew she had to step up and she did … She’s one of kids that coordinates our summer basketball program … She makes sure all the girls can be there … She’s a home-schooled girl who carries a 3.7 unweighted and 4.0 weighted grade point average … She’s heading to play at St. Mary’s in Virginia … We’re gonna miss a lot with Milly graduating … Losing over 13 points per game will be tough … But we’re really gonna miss her work ethic and leadership here.”

Drummond

Utility – Hayden Kimbrough

Hernando – Junior

Hayden Kimbrough

COMMENTS: Another in the long line of student/athletes from Hernando High that plays sport-to-sport … The 5-foot-2 Kimbrough remained active playing volleyball, serving as a varsity cheerleader, playing basketball and varsity softball … After being named All-County in volleyball two seasons ago, was named All-County for the first time following her third season with the Lady Leopards … Broke in as a freshman, playing 22 games in 2016-17 … She averaged three points and two steals per game … Nearly doubled her offensive production as a sophomore … She finished averaging 5.6 points per game and added 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per tilt … This past season, Kimbrough finished as the Purple and Gold’s No. 2 scorer, averaging a personal-best eight points per game … She led the team in three-pointers (12) … She pumped in a season-high 18 markers in the 52-46 loss at home t HCA.

QUOTE: “She’s a firecracker for us … Whatever I verbally asked her to do, she came through … She’s a very aggressive player… But there’s so much passion in her game … We need girls like her to continue to play on the court … This year, we needed her to compliment Nakayla … Next year, she needs to be the No. 1 scorer.”

Jacobs

Coach of the Year – Mike Drummond

Hernando Christian Academy – Tenth Year

Mike Drummond

COMMENTS: Initial All-County selection … Guided the HCA to a sterling 22-4 record in 2018-19 … Lady Lions lost three times to 26-2 and state runner-up Tampa-Bayshore Christian Christian … Though Weeki Wachee reeled off 13 wins a row this season, HCA strung together a seasonal-best 14 victories in a row … HCA was eliminated in the Class 2A, Region II finals by Bradenton Christian, 57-36 … BC won the state semifinal before being eliminated by Melbourne-Florida Prep in the finals, 67-35.

QUOTE: “I‘ve been really blessed … To be able to win back-to-back district championships was no small feat here … Building the consistency it takes in winning 20-game winners isn‘t easy … I’ve been blessed with great assistant coaches and great girls, who have bought into the program …We’re a small 2A team that has worked hard to schedule people like Central and Hernando ,,, During the summer, we’ve played Weeki Wachee ,,, We’re not avoiding anyone ,,, We’ve had a tough time scheduling those local schools to play ,,,, Sometimes its worked out playing them, other times it hasn’t.”

Emily Gore

QUOTE: “They’re a program, I’ve only read about … But to take a group of kids and beat a public school program, got my attention …They must be doing something right over there to win over 20 games and nearly make the Final Four.”

– Gore

Mike Munro

QUOTE: “We have not played them in a few years, but see them during the summer every year .,. They play a good brand of basketball … We know about his kids and they know our kids ,,, Mike has done a good job leading his kids to success on the court.”
