Player of the Year

No. 1 Singles – Oswaldo Cherubini

Springstead – Sophomore

Oswaldo Cherubini

COMMENTS: Two-year letterman … Repeat All-County selection … Voted Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019 while anchoring No. 1 singles and doubles … Listed at 5-foot-8, 165 pounds … Exceptional student/athlete who carries 3.96 unweighted and 4.5 weighted grade point average as part of the International Baccalaureate program at SHS … Debuted in 2018 … As a freshman, the Venezuelan product posted a 9-5 mark in singles not losing to any local player (4-0) … In district play, after splitting matches with Lecanto’s tough Malik Tahiri during the regular season, he was ambushed in the first set by Tahiri at the Jonesville Tennis Center … In doubles, Cherubini/Dylan Palmer posted an 8-5 No. 1 doubles slate, including a 3-0 run versus local opponents … As a sophomore in 2019, Cherubini improved to 13-3 overall … He went from being ranked eighth in winning percentage to fifth in the circuit … Season was highlighted by a 4-0 run versus county foes … In the 3A-5 Tourney, he reached the finals before falling to Vanguard’s Luke Zirakian, 6-2, 6-1.

QUOTE: “Tremendous work ethic … Started to transform himself into an elite player … He did so by improving his physical prowess … and fitness level … He’s more of a baseline player, but he’s getting better at closing out points at the net.”

Springstead’s Brett Teitelman

Tom Brown

QUOTE: “Been the best player around here … Quality kid … Can hit shots from any point on the court.”

NCT’s Tom Brown

QUOTE: “He’s an all-around great player … Moves well … Was by far the best player I saw this year.”

HCA’s Scott Dedmon

Bob Croyle

QUOTE: “He’s very consistent … He keeps the ball in play … Doesn’t make many unforced errors … His behavior is great on the court, too.”

Weeki Wachee’s Bob Croyle

QUOTE: “The kid loves the game … Definitely plays aggressively on both sides of the court … Type of player that comes in with a game plan and makes adjustments as he goes.“

Hernando’s Herman Scriven

No. 2 Singles – Dylan Palmer

Springstead – Senior

Dylan Palmer

COMMENTS: Four-year letterman … Three-time All-County pick … Broke in as a freshman with a splash in 2016 … Amassed a 10-3 won-lost slate in singles … Captured his initial district singles title along the clay courts at the Jonesville Tennis Center at No. 4 singles … Was eliminated in the 3A-III regional semifinals by Land O’ Lakes’ Kenta Xu, 6-4, 6-3 … As a sophomore in 2017, Palmer etched the county’s top won-lost mark at 13-3 … Versus county opponents, Palmer racked up a perfect 5-0 run … Because SHS foreign exchange student Alex Kasim, who played at No. 2 singles all season, did not play in districts (out of town), Palmer was bumped from No. 4 singles to No. 3 singles in districts and was eliminated in the second round in Gainesville’s 3A-5 singles event … As a junior, Palmer finished ranked second in the county in wins at 15-3 … Went unbeaten versus county opponents at 5-0 … Garnered his second district singles title at No. 2 besting Vanguard‘s Spencer Silitch 2-6. 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 …That win was third in three attempts against Silitch … In 2019, Palmer paced all Hernando County players in victories (15), tied with NCT’s Cayden Muir and led in winning percentage (.822) … Never lost to a county opponent, finishing 5-0 … Reached the Class 3A, District 5 finals for the third time … Was upset by Vanguard’s Seth Robinette, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 … During the regular season, Palmer had swept Robinette in straight sets … Palmer finished 53-11 lifetime in singles (83 percent) … His 64 singles matches ranks third all-time at SHS … His 53 singles wins ranks as second-best behind Hank Deslaurier’s 59 from 2011-14.

QUOTE: “Only one of our players to reach three district singles finals … Ranks extremely high in leadership and high morale character … Dylan is the epitome of what you want from your kids … He showed he can handle responsibility … His game is all about coming back … There’s no quit with him. Ever. … He was a true captain … You can‘t replace kids like that … Hopefully, his presence has rubbed off on the others to carry it forward.“

Teitelman

No. 3 Singles – John Ruskowski

Springstead – Freshman

John Ruskowski

COMMENTS: First-year starter … Initial All-Hernando County selection … One of the building blocks for the future for the Eagles … Debuted at 10-6 in singles, ranking eighth overall locally … Against local opponents, Ruskowski was 5-0 including a win over NCT’s two-time district champion Cayden Muir, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 … Fell in the 3A-5 semifinals to Ocala-Vanguard’s Andres Trias, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

QUOTE: “His highlight was beating the Nature Coast kid … He’s our future … His game is being built around his great fitness … We’re counting on his game to get even better … His strength on the court? It’s his ability to hit balls deep and powerful … Technically, he’s very good … Has to develop his control with his power game … John has room improvement … He has the right attitude for the courts … He definitely works hard on his own.”

– Teitelman

No. 4 Singles – David Parker

Springstead – Senior

David Parker

COMMENTS: Thirdyear letterman … Served as a starter the last two seasons … Made great strides … Initial All-County selection … Enjoyed a cup of coffee as a sophomore in 2017 finishing 2-1 in singles action and 2-3 in doubles play … As a fulltime starter for the first time in 2018, he struggled at the varsity level, finishing 4-9 overall in singles … That included a 2-2 mark versus county foes … Turned in terrific senior campaign in 2019 … Finished 9-6 overall mark in singles play to rank ninth locally … That included a perfect 5-0 mark against county foes … Topped 14-match winner Quintin Hotop at NCT in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 … Following week in districts at the Jonesville Tennis Center, Parker dropped his first-round match to Lecanto’s Stephen Lane, 6-2, 6-1… Finished a personal best 8-6 in doubles play.

QUOTE: “I spent a lot of time dealing with the mental side of tennis with David … It’s a tremendous mentally-challenging sport … What we stressed was you can’t let nuisances bother you when you’re out there on the courts … We communicated a lot and that led to a reduction in errors … He was a much more mature tennis player this season than last … David was our second captain … He was a responsible IB leader.”

– Teitelman

No. 5 Singles – Alvin Nguyen

Springstead – Senior

Alvin Nguyen

COMMENTS: More than serviceable two-year starter … First-time All-County pick … Broke in as a junior in 2018 and fashioned an 8-7 won-lost slate in singles and a 3-2 mark in doubles … A year hence, he placed strictly in singles … Concluded the season ranked seventh overall behind a fine 10-5 slate … That included a perfect 4-0 mark against county opponents …In the 3A-5 Tourney in Alachua County, Nguyen finished 1-1 falling during the semifinals to Lecanto’s Jason Seville, 6-3, 6-1 … Concluded his varsity career at 18-12 in singles play.

QUOTE: “Came into tennis with limited experience … Made incredible strides in two years … His game improved remarkably … He came to the sport because he was buddies with most of those IB kids … He’s definitely a good athlete … I’m gonna miss his camaraderie … He had a hard-working spirit, which is why he turned out to be a pretty good player.”

– Teitelman

No. 1 Doubles – Oswaldo Cherubini/Dylan Palmer

Springstead – Sophomore/Senior

Oswaldo Cherubini
Dylan Palmer

COMMENTS: Rare four-time All-County doubles selection for Palmer … He and SHS graduate Alex Hoover (2014=17) are four-time doubles players … For Cherubini, this is his second All-County doubles choice … The duo served as county’s best in 2018 at 8-5 … Went 3-0 within the county borders … Lost in the 3A-5 semifinals to Ocala-Vanguard’s Spencer Stilich/Luke Zirakian … A year later in 2019, the Eagle tandem posted a county-leading 12-4 mark … That included a perfect 5-0 effort against Hernando County foes … The Eagle duo lost in a three-set tiebreaker during the 3A-5 finals to Vanguard’s Luke Zirakian/Seth Robinette, 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-4) … As the curtains descended upon on his prep doubles career, Palmer finished 34-16 (68 percent) … His 34 doubles wins ranks fourth all-time … His 50 doubles matches ranks fifth all-time at SHS.

QUOTE: “Had a great season together … Made it to the district championship, where they took it to three grueling sets … They just couldn’t finish it … The chemistry was great … Those two got along … Palmer’s the type of doubles player that if you can’t play with him, something’s wrong … Their strength? They both played well at the net.”

– Teitelman

No. 2 Doubles – John Ruskowski/David Parker

Springstead – Freshman/Senior

John Ruskowski
David Parker

COMMENTS: For Ruskowski and Parker, this was their initial All-County doubles selection … Parker went a non-descript 2-3 in doubles in 2018 … A year later, he teamed up with Ruskowski at No. 2 doubles to finish 8-6 … The Eagles duo finished 3-0 versus county opponents highlighted by 8-0 nod over NCT’s Cayden Muir/Owen King in Brooksville … During the 3A-5 Tourney quarterfinals at the Jonesville Center, Lecanto’s Stephen Lane/Jason Seville bounced Parker/Ruskowski, 6-1, 1-6, 10-8.

QUOTE: “I think they both would‘ve wanted a another crack at Lecanto … They played well together … They complimented each other on the court … I thought freshman (Ruskowski) showed a thought of respect to the senior (Parker) all season long.”

– Teitelman

Coach of the Year – Brett Teitelman

Springstead – 7th Year (2nd Year at SHS)

Brett Teitelman Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

COMMENTS: In five seasons from 2001-05, Teitelman guided Hernando High to four district championships … He was feted as Hernando County’s Coach of the Year following the 2002 and 2003 seasons … After Challenger K-8 opened up, he built a 12-year middle school dynasty with the Navigators’ boys and girls tennis programs … He returned to the prep ranks in 2018 after being hired by F.W. Springstead … Led the Mariner Boulevard crew to back-to-back Hernando County championships in 2018=19… The Eagles finished 5-0 versus county foes in both campaigns … Counting his two county crowns at HHS in 2002 and 2004, he now has four all-time … Led SHS to a pair of third-place finishes the past two seasons in the rugged Class 3A, District 5 Tournament along the clay courts of the Jonesville Tennis Center in Gainesville … SHS missed out on forcing a playoff for district runner-up trophy this season by one agonizing point.

QUOTE: “I feel fortunate to be surrounded by good players willing to come together and practice … We haven’t lost to team from the county the past two seasons … The strength of our team was our No. 1-2 singles players in Oswald (Cherubini) and Dylan (Palmer) … If they each won and won together at No. 1 doubles, all we needed was one more point to win matches … Another key point was the senior leadership here … It was outstanding … Even though I had to deal with some health issues off the court, the guys remained positive and focused … Another key was these guys were positive role models … It was mostly a group of IB kids – all seniors – that came together due to the love of tennis and their teammates … Every one of these kids were trustworthy and hard working … You don’t always get that combo … We’re hoping some incoming freshmen will come in and help bolster our team for next year.”

Teitelman

Herman Scriven

QUOTE: “Over and over, Coach Teitelman has demonstrated his love for the sport … He has the ability to pass on a certain skill set to his players … What I like most? That he’s approachable … He’ll offer suggestions like doing this or doing that to hopefully improve our game.”

Scriven

Tom Brown

QUOTE: “Springstead had a great season … He plays in a really tough district … He was like a cheerleader during matches – always encouraging his kids.”

Brown

Bob Croyle

QUOTE: “Springstead had far and away the best team here … He’s a landslide choice for Coach of the Year … Deep down, he’s a good dude.”

Croyle
