Ross Stalcup

Ross Stalcup

COMMENTS: Four-year letterman … Also competed in track and field … All-County trackster in the 1,600 meters in 2017 … Three-peat All-County cross country selection … Repeated as Runner of the Year in 2018 … Broke in as a freshman in 2015 competing in 10 meets … One of only four county runners to compete in a season-high 10 meets … Ranked eighth-fastest in 18:15.01 … A year later, enjoyed a breakout season behind nine races … Placed among the top 10 four times (Weeki Wachee, Hernando/Citrus, Crystal River, 2A-7) in four consecutive meets … Placed 29th in 2A-II Meet and 112th in his second FHSAA State Finals in Tallahassee … Ranked third in the county behind a personal record 17:37.15… In 2017, Stalcup competed in seven meets and paced the Leopards to the finish line in all seven … The season was highlighted by three Top 10 finishes at NCT (third), the Hernando/Citrus Distance Classic (third) and the 2A-7 Meet (third) at Hernando Beach’s Weeki Wachee Preserve … He posted his personal record of 17:13.84 at McKethan Lake … That clocking also served as the county’s best … In 2018, Stalcup competed in eight meets … Posted a personal-best five top-10 efforts: Zak Lukas and Class 2A, District 7 (third), Crystal River Invite and Hernando-Citrus Distance Classic (fourth), and the Class 2A, Region II Meet (eighth) … During the regional race at the Weeki Wachee Preserve, Stalcup notched a career-best 16:56.62 clocking … With it, he became the 11th-ever Leopard to break 17 minutes … He also qualified for his third FHSAA State Finals in Leon County … Was Hernando County’s lone state representative … Placed 73rd at 2A States in 17:26.61 … Finished his prep career as 11th fastest Leopard … Competed in 34 lifetime 5Ks, locking up 12 top 10 efforts.

Patrick Skipper

QUOTE: “Regular season is made up glorified practices leading up to the post season … Ross understood that’s when he had to perform … States is where everybody wants to be and he was the only guy from the county to make it … That says a lot about his ability … He finished on a great note … He did a great job.“

Weeki Wachee’s Patrick Skipper

QUOTE: “He’s an impressive kid … Had a couple of down races … I don’t know him personally, but to be the only runner from Hernando County to make it to states is impressive.”

NCT’s Eric Milholholland

Rayaan Kader

Springstead – Sophomore

Rayaan Kader

COMMENTS: First-year distance runner …First-time All-County selection … Walked into the season as an unknown after a quiet track campaign in 2018 … Burst on to the season like a machine gun … Led the county in 5K races (10) … Paced the county in most top-10 efforts (6) … Was first to the finish line for the Eagles 10 times … In head-to-head meets, Kader bested 2018 Hernando County Runner of the Year Ross Stalcup of Hernando four times in four meets … Closed the post season finishing third at the Hernando-Citrus Distance Classic, placed seventh during the 3A-7 Meet at Brooksville’s McKethan Lake and finished 18th during the rugged Class 3A, Region II Meet at Lecanto High … Notched his fastest time at Lecanto High in 17:09.52 … Of Spring stead’s 103 distance runners over the past 17 years (since 5K racing began), Kader ranks as the Eagles‘ second-fastest ever … Just 24 seconds behind 2015 ROY of the Year Allen Keister.

QUOTE: “Nothing against Allen (Keister), but Rayaan is the hardest worker … Ability-wise, they’re along the same lines … He gets mad if we ask him to take a day off; just an unbelievably hard worker … Great work ethic … While most guys post personal records at McKethan Lake, Rayaan did it on a non-PR course at Lecanto. That says a lot about the type of runner he is … He’s also a team guy and runs for all the right reasons … He’ll concentrate on the mile during track season to improve his speed for cross country next year.”

Springstead’s Brandon Wright

Trevor Raimondi

Springstead – Junior

Trevor Raimondi

COMMENTS: Suffered an up and down first season … Initial All-Hernando County selection … Began the season competing for Hernando High … Ran three races including placing an impressive fourth in 17:49.50 during the Zak Lukas Invite at McKethan Lake … Transferred to Springstead and competed in two races before being injured … Seasonal highlight was placing 25th during the Hernando-Citrus Distance Classic to help the Eagles win the Hernando County championship for the first time in 30 years.

QUOTE: “Making All-County gives him a boost of confidence … He helped round out our top seven this year … With him, we’re probably a year away from seriously contending for regionals … He was a nice addition until he got hurt.”

Springstead’s  Wright

Frank Tirado

Nature Coast Technical – Senior

Frank Tirado

COMMENTS: Initial season of cross country … Excelled in track & field, mostly as a half-miler before this season … Was a two-time All-County choice in the 800 meters and 4×800 relay in 2017 and 2018 …First time All-Hernando County cross country pick … Competed in seven meets ,,, Led the Sharks to the finish line in five races … Produced a pair of top-10 placings at Whispering Pines Park during the Citrus High Invitational (seventh) and the Class 2A, District 7 Meet at Brooksville’s McKethan Lake (fifth) … Registered the county’s third-fastest time at McKethan Lake in 17:27.00 … Closed the season placing 23rd during the 2A-II Meet at Hernando Beach’s Weeki Wachee Preserve.

QUOTE: “Got to know him better this season … He’s a great kid … He does whatever is asked of him … Has the raw tools to break 2:00 in the half-mile … Is a kid that will not do the minimum … He’s constantly working out to get better … This season will help with his stamina and endurance in order to run for a college … He asks all the right questions …He’d be a perfect choice for a captain … Is taking dual enrollment (college) courses … Has a great head on his shoulders.”

NCT’s Milholland

Yeatesh Raghunandan

Weeki Wachee – Senior

Yeatesh Raghunandan

COMMENTS: Fourth-year cross country letter winner … Second All-County selection …. Also named made it in 2016 …Ran long distance for the track team … Was named All-County in track in the 3,200 meters in 2017 … Broke in as a freshman in 2015, competing in seven races races with zero Top-10 efforts … He was ranked 27th in the county with a personal best time of 19:33.10 … In 2016, his performance dramatically improved … Climbed into the Top 10, finishing as the fifth-fastest county thinclad … Competed in eight meets … Cut his personal record to 18:13.09 … As a junior in 2017, Raghunandan competed in seven meets and broke 18 minutes … He finished ranked seventh in the top 10 with a time of 17:56.38 … In 2018, pushed by his younger and up and coming brother Jaiden, Yeatesh set personal records for the most races (9) and most top-10 efforts (4) … Led the Hornets to the finish line in eight meets … Placed among the Top 10 at Zak Lukas Invitational (seventh), Crystal River Invite (ninth), Hernando-Citrus Distance Classic (tenth) and the Class 2A, District 7 Meet at McKethan Lake (seventh) … Notched his career-best time of 17:31.34 at the McKethan Lake … Closed out his prep career placing 33rd overall in 17:48.99 during regionals at the Weeki Wachee Preserve … In WWHS’ brief nine-year history, Yeatesh is tied with Brandon Boggs with the most career races (31) … Holds the school record for most top 10 efforts (5) and ranks as the school’s second-fastest runner behind Dylan McKeag’s 17:11.10 in 2014.

QUOTE: “Yeatesh has helped in putting our program on the county map … Last summer, he had thoughts of not running; I’m glad he changed his tune … He’s been our bell cow … He gives us a hint of identity locally … His strength? He’s gonna put in the work … Now he’s not real vocal and sometimes he tries to do too much … He tried to fit in as a quiet leader.“

– Weeki Wachee’s Skipper

Jaiden Raghunandan

Weeki Wachee – Sophomore

Jaiden Raghunandan

COMMENTS: Second-year distance runner … First-time All-County performer …. Serves as the foundation of the Hornet cross country program going forward … Broke in as a freshman in 2017 … Competed in seven meets … Finished ranked tenth-fastest in the county in 18:05.64 … In Year 2, Jaiden competed in a personal record nine meets … Etched his first two Top-10 efforts … Placed 10th overall at the Zak Lukas Invitational at McKethan Lake and tenth during the Crystal River Invite … Closed the season placing 12th in the 2A-7 Meet at McKethan Lake in a personal-best 17:49.42 …A week later in regionals, he placed 42nd in 18:07.93.

QUOTE: “The sky is the limit with his ability … By the time he’s finished, he may be the best-ever distance runner from Weeki Wachee … I think he has the potential to put us on the map at the state level … Could be our first state qualifier … He just needs to work just a little harder in practice … I think he sees the big picture with his potential.”

Weeki Wachee’s Skipper

Coach of the Year

Brandon Wright

Springstead – Ninth Year

Brandon Wright

COMMENTS: Believe or not, the Eagles were state runners-up in 1990 and 1991 … The much beleaguered Springstead program has operated in relative obscurity for some time … Until this season, the last time the Eagles were county champions was in 1990 under now deceased Fred Hudson …The next hurdle is attempting to advance the entire team to regionals … Wright has guided the Eagles to fifth place in districts in five of the last six seasons… Problem is only the top four teams advance to regionals.

QUOTE: “It was a special year .. Winning the county was an achievement … It meant a lot to the boys … The kids wanted to be the best … I think winning breeds winning … This will only help us going forward … It was an honor coaching this team …Obviously, we reached a height we haven’t been at in a while, but as a program our biggest goal is to reach regionals … To me that’s the next threshold we’d like to attain.”

– Springstead’s Wright

Kris Brooks

QUOTE: “Brandon has done a good job… He knows what he’s doing … He’s one of the best cross country coaches around this area … Definitely earned it by winning the county meet.”

– Central’s Kris Brooks

QUOTE: “The county meet was really close. The second through sixth-place teams were separated by only six points … Coach Wright did a good job of getting after his kids … To do well you have to have backups in place.”
