Kennedy Weissman

COMMENTS: Multi-sport athlete at 5-foot-2, who also competed in weightlifting and track and field …. Firstyear letter winner … Initial All-County selection … Lightning quick … Possesses great vision … Exploded on to the season leading all Hernando County players to the famed “Triple Crown” scoring the most goals (34), collecting the most assists (21), and finishing with the most amount of points (89) … Helped guide the Sharks to the Hernando County title and 3A-7 finals …Tallied at least one point in 18 of 21 games played … Topped out with five goals against Anclote … Amassed three assists thrice against Weeki Wachee, Bell Creek Academy and Springstead.

QUOTE: “Her game starts well before she steps on the pitch with her mentality … Kennedy’s games is pure speed … Type of player that likes to take over and dominate the field … We had a little bit of that with Mia (DeRonda) the year before … Kennedy is primarily a right winger … Our push has been for her to take over the middle… In some regards, we held Kennedy back … She played only four complete games all year … In Year 2, I want to see her take the ball inside more … She’s been trained very well to get the ball out wide … Has an innate ability not to get tired.”

NCT’s Brandon Chitwood

Danny Fierro

QUOTE: “Kennedy is a rare athlete …You can’t coach the speed she has and she’s got a ton of it … The sky’s the limit on her ability going forward … To me, she’s a rare find.”

Ex-Weeki Wachee mentor Danny Fierro

David Shrader

QUOTE: “She caught my eye in the preseason …That’s when I noticed how strong and how fast she was … She could see the field exceptionally well … What sets her apart is her ball skills and her speed.”

– Hernando’s David Shrader

QUOTE: “I saw clean, crisp play from her … She could end up being another Sammy Betters … I see nothing, but good things coming from her over the next three years.”

Central’s Ken Brening

Reilley Bain – Forward

Weeki Wachee – Junior

Reilley Bain

COMMENTS: Multi-purpose student/athlete, who played tennis in the spring … Named All-Hernando County selection in soccer and track and field while maintaining a 3.9 weighted grade point average … First Hornet player voted Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2017 … Debuted with a bang … Helped guide the US-19 program to 10 wins … Poured in 24 goals and added 15 assists to edge HHS senior Kaylee Frascatore for scoring title, 63-61 points … As a sophomore, her second season was reduced stymied due to an injury … She still managed to deposit 33 goals and add nine assists for 75 points … Finished as the county’s third-leading scorer in 2017-18 … This past season, she finished second in the county in goal scoring (31) and added 11 assists to finish with 73 points.

QUOTE: “This year stood out due her progression as a leader … She earned the respect of the other girls with what she did on the field … I noticed a change in her approach this season… She was more of a position leader… Did a good job on constructing an attack … She still gets good looks at goals and assists … As the team gets better, she’ll serve as the bridge to get the others across … I love the way she leads by example … She’s an intense competitor that remains positive and has done a terrific job of building up the others around her.”

Fierro

Forward – Mia DeRonda

Nature Coast Technical – Sophomore

Mia DeRonda

COMMENTS: Second-year letter winner … Also participated in cross country and track & field … Repeat All-County selection in soccer … As a 5-foot-3 freshman striker, she served as the No. 1 scoring option for the defense-first Sharks with 16 goals and five assists. She finished with 37 points to close the season as the county’s fourth-highest scorer … As a sophomore, DeRonda tallied points in 18 of 21 matches … She concluded the season with 30 goals while adding 12 assists … She poured in a school record six goals against Zephyrhills on Jan. 25 … Finished third in the county in scoring with 72 points – nearly doubling her production from the winter before.

QUOTE: “In Year 2, Mia walked in as a different player … She added to her game from her freshman year … She kept the formations in tact and she and Kennedy did a good job of linking up … She can pass and dribble or run the field all day … Has that ability to keep going and going … Because she didn’t do cross country, she was a lot fresher for soccer … It seemed like she was ready to go from the first whistle.”

Chitwood

Forward– Brooke Brening

Central – Junior

Brooke Brening

COMMENTS: Second-year starter for the Bears … Initial All-County selection … Debuted quietly in 2017-18, notching one goal and one assist … Morphed into the Bears’ primary scoring threat a year later … Brooke tallied points in 10 of the 11 matches she played … Poured in a team-best six goals on Nov. 13 against Dunnellon … Finished with 17 goals and six assists … Concluded the season ranked as the county’s No. 5 scorer with 40 points.

QUOTE: “Win, lose or draw, Brooke remains positive day in and day out … She works hard … I just wish we had some more players to compliment her … She’s the first to praise her teammates for great play or a pass … She’s the leader of this team … She’s the one who pushes the pace with the rest of her teammates.”

– Brening

Forward – Gianna Huber

Hernando – Junior

Gianna Huber

COMMENTS: Multi-sport athlete … Has participated in track and played tennis this spring … Repeat All-County selection in soccer … Broke in as a freshman with two goals and one assist in 2016-17 ,,, Began to emerge a viable scoring threat with 10 goals and one assist a year later … That scoring combination served as the county’s eighth highest … Complimented by more weapons in 2018-19, Huber enjoyed a breakout campaign … Tallied a personal record 27 goals and added eight assists … Finished with a team-best 62 points … Climbed to fourth-highest scorer locally.

QUOTE: “Gianna was a big contributor … Teams were trying to mark her up … She’s flexible to play up top of the formation or at midfield … She’s a competitor …Demonstrates a good attitude … Did whatever she needed for the team … As far as next year, I don’t have to worry about her work effort in practice . All I’ll do is point her in the right direction. She’ll do the rest.”

Shrader

Midfield – Bailey Burdin

Hernando – Junior

Bailey Burdin

COMMENTS: Second varsity season … Initial All-Hernando County pick … Only plays soccer… Didn’t score a point in limited action in 2017-18 … Couldn’t budge off the pitch a year hence … Served as the team’s No. 2 scoring option with nine goals … Finished as the team’s No. 2 passer with seven assists … Cracked the county top-10 list finishing eighth overall with 25 points.

QUOTE: “Demonstrates good balance and has good speed … Each night she brings speed and desire to the pitch ,,, With more work in the off-season, she’ll get even better … The more she increases her skill level, she’ll pile up even more goals and assists.”

Shrader

Midfield – Alexandrea “Alex” Florkowski

Nature Coast Technical – Sophomore

Alexandrea Florkowski

COMMENTS: The definition of a multiple sport-athlete … At 5-foot-6, has played varsity football (as the Sharks’ placekicker), served on the weightlifting team and played two seasons of varsity soccer …Repeat All-County selection … In well-known for her vision … Serves as the team’s quarterback at midfield … As a freshman, she played in 19 matches and finished with 20 points … Tied for the ninth-highest scoring total that season … Her first-year highlights included dishing off four assists in taming Hernando on Jan. 22, 5-0 … As a sophomore, duplicated her numbers with 21 points in 21 matches … Etched five goals, but aided the attack with 11 assists … Tied for 10th in the local circuit with 21 total points … In the Jan. 14 8-1 spanking over Springstead, Florkowski deposited two assists and two goals for a career-best six points … She tied her personal record of four assists against Crystal River in Jan. 18’s 8-0 victory.

QUOTE: “Without a doubt, the most individually team-oriented player on the team … You can’t teach how she sees the field and distributes the ball; it just happens … Plays with a great mentality and stature on the field … She’ll do anything she can – including sacrificing her body – to help her team win a match … She’s a fantastic player; a coaches’ dream.”

Chitwood

Midfield – Bricyn Wylie

Hernando – Junior

Bricyn Wylie

COMMENTS: Played junior varsity volleyball before transitioning to varsity soccer … Instant success in her first season on the pitch… Named All-County … Saw time as a striker and at midfield … Respectable debut with eight goals and eight assists … Closed out the 2018-19 campaign as the county’s No 9 scorer with 24 points.

QUOTE: “She’s a quiet person … She works hard at her craft … With more work, she can only get even better … She possesses good speed … The more she increases her skill level, the more goals and assists she will score.”

– Shrader

Midfield – Lauren Mullen

Weeki Wachee – Senior

Lauren Mullen

COMMENTS: Four-year starter … Three-time All-County selection … Was named Hernando County’s co-Player of the Year in 2017-18 along side Springstead striker Erica Hiller … Debuted as the team’s leading scorer in 2015-16 behind 11 goals and three assists for 25 points … That total tied for sixth-best in the county … In 2016-17 with Reilley Bain and Marleen Ohr on her flanks, Mullen dished a county-leading 18 assists besides pouring in 12 goals … Her 44 points tied her with Ohr for fifth=best in the county scoring ranks … Unbelievable third season … As a junior, she accumulated 22 goals, but remarkably reset the Hernando County record for single season assists with 34 … It snapped Springstead’s Jen O’Sullivan’s 1993-94 record of 27 assists … She also set the single game assist mark with six assists against flapless Zephyrhills on Dec. 13 …Springstead’s Cari LaRocco in 1995 and Jen Bernhardt in 1993 – held the old mark with five assists against Zephyrhills and Ridgewood respectively … In 2018-19, Mullen finished second in the county in assists to NCT’s Weissman, 21-15 … She played in 13 matches and scored at least one point in 11 … Finished with 12 goals…Concluded her prep career with 70 assists – two shy of the county record set by O’Sullivan (1993-96) …Signed to play D-II soccer beginning next fall with the Erskine College Flying Fleet in Due West, South Carolina.

QUOTE: “What a relationship between Reilley (Bain) and Lauren ,,, Bain was the scorer and Lauren was the passer … Lauren made passes most players don’t normally see … Her crosses were on point, plus she could finish off scoring opportunities … Going forward, I don’t one player replacing what Lauren meant for Weeki Wachee. It may take 2-3 players … I have to thank Lauren … When she arrived here she served as the first brick …She was the foundation for this program going forward … Her leadership and her competitiveness helped drive this program to new heights … Her game is still on the rise … She’s gonna be able to arrive at Erskine and make an immediate impact.”

– Fierro

Defender – Rachel Becker

Hernando– Senior

Rachel Becker

COMMENTS: Four-year letterman … First-time All-Hernando County selection at 5-foot-9 … Ex-goalie dropped 40 pounds during the off season to increase her stamina … Was never much of a scorer … Broke in quietly as a freshman in 2015-16 with one assist … As a sophomore she tallied one assist and chipped in 1½ shutouts between the pipes … Was credited with two assists as a junior … Enjoyed her best-ever campaign in 2017-18 … While toiling on defense, Becker tallied a personal record six goals and seven assists.

QUOTE: “I’ve coached Rachel since she played 10-Under … She was always a big girl, who could hold her own on the pitch … Possesses a great leg … Plays her position well … Dropping 40 pounds this off-season made her an outstanding player … She remained in the weight room and never lost her agility … Rachel proved that if you want anything bad enough, you can do it – if you work at it …She definitely set her goals prior to her senior year … She wanted to be a better scoring player and person … She achieved both goals … That’s a credit to her.”

– Shrader

Defense – Margaret Mary “M&M” Steinkamp

Hernando – Junior

Margaret Mary Steinkamp

COMMENTS: Multi-sport athlete … Backup on the varsity volleyball team … Starter for the tennis team … Known as the “Secretary of Defense” for the Lady Leopards’ soccer team Nicknamed M&M …Voted the team’s finest defender in 2018-19 … Named All-Hernando County for the first time … Whoever was the other team’s toughest offensive threat, Coach Shrader gave Steinkamp the task of man marking that person … Served as the anchor of the much-improved Purple and Gold defense … Chipped in her first goal and assist of her career this season.

QUOTE: “Everybody on team looked up to M&M … Before her, we never directly marked anyone … M&M was the one that continually closed down tough opponents … In her favor, she utilizes great speed and has tremendous recovery capabilities … Type of player that doesn’t get down after a mistake … Going forward, she’ll be the defensive leader in the back … We will build our defense around her skill set.”

– Shrader

Defense – Hailie Hunt

Springstead – Junior

Hailey Hunt

COMMENTS: Two-year starter … Repeat All-Hernando County selection … Team’s second-best defender as a sophomore behind four-time all-star defender Alehsa Tinny … In 2018-19 without the complimentary supporting cast, she stood out along the backline … Not much of a scoring threat … Tallied one assist as a sophomore.

QUOTE: “Hailey is a captain and leads by example. She’s physical and intelligent. She reads the field and makes adjustments. She is the anchor of our defensive back line. I’m excited to see her potential and growth for next season!”

– Springstead’s Scott Wern

Defender – Zoie Herzek

Weeki Wachee – Junior

Zoie Herzek

COMMENTS: Three-year letterman … Repeat All-County defender … Younger sister of former All-County goalie Erika Herzek … Is regarded as the Hornets’ best one-on-one defender … Never demonstrated a penchant for scoring … Tallied her initial prep goal in Nov. 28’s 8-1 rout over Hernando at Weeki Wachee.

QUOTE: “She has the size to be a good defender … She’s tall and lanky … When she’s ready, she’ll probably be the best centerback around … We look to her to be the leader in the back … Needs to work on being a bit more vocal … Her job is to organize the back line help us maintain our shape.”

Fierro

Goalkeeper – Jessica Flaherty

Hernando – Senior

Jessica Flaherty

COMMENTS: Three-year letterman … Initial All-County selection … Insulated by Hernando’s best defensive back line in 23 winters, Flaherty responded with the most amount of shutouts since that season (8).

QUOTE: “There was great chemistry between our backline and keeper … There was a mutual trust with out defense and goalie … That’s what you need …I’m gonna miss Jessica’s great hands, terrific lateral movement and great field vision … Flaherty stayed in constant communication with those girls in the back … She was our traffic cop … That’s the reason she produced 21 scoreless halves.”

– Shrader

Coach of the Year – David Shrader

Hernando – 5th Year

David Shrader

COMMENTS: Fifth-year mentor … Initial All-Hernando County selection … Inherited a program that had been allergic to winning … HHS had not posted a winning season since going 10-9 in 2003-04 under Kristi Mule … Shrader guided the 26-year-old program to a 12-7 overall … The 12 wins tied the school’s second-best ever season back in 1996-97 … This year’s Purple and Gold tallied 63 goals – the second most-ever amount of goals – only behind the 1995-96 squad that tallied 67 goals … Most importantly, the defense dramatically improved its stature … This year’s Leopards yielded 33 goals – that’s the same amount of goals the 2002-03 team permitted … The school record is 11 allowed by the 1995-96 district championship squad …This past winter, HHS produced a five-game win skein and captured eight of its last 10 matches … HHS Hernando also exorcized some demons besting Pasco in 3A-7 quarterfinals, 6-2. … The Pirates had never dropped a post-season match to Hernando, eliminating the Leopards three previous times … With the win, the Leopards improved to 10-27-2 lifetime against the Dade City crew … HHS’ outstanding run came to halt in the 3A-7 semifinals against defending champion and host Wesley Chapel, 3-0.

QUOTE: “First of all, God blessed us in staying healthy … Give credit to the girls. They bought into what we offered in the off-season … I’m glad to see them get something out of what they put in … Deep down, I’m humbled being chosen as Coach of the Year by my peers … I’m so appreciative, especially to our ladies for putting it together … We’ve established a new platform going forward … We’ve got to work a little harder, to do a little better.”

Shrader

Ken Brening

QUOTE: “This is a fantastic honor … He and I are friends … Over the years, David has talked me down from the ledge a couple of times … He really deserves this … He doesn’t have any kids at Hernando; he’s doing this out of the goodness from his heart … Give him all the credit … He’s worked hard for this … I’m happy for him … If there was anybody who could’ve walked away before this, it was David.”

Brening

Brandon Chitwood

QUOTE: “He pieced together a terrific season with a historically bad program … The key was he got the girls to buy into what he was selling … Give those girls credit for playing hard ever second they were out on the pitch … No matter how you break down their season, it’s a true testament to those kids’ attitudes … Honestly, what they achieved was impressive … They were the team nobody wanted to play in districts, especially after how they hammered Weeki Wachee at the end of the season.”

– Chitwood

QUOTE: “Shrader certainly put in the work over there … He’s been waiting for those girls to turn the page for a while … I think the key was Shrader getting them all on the same page.“
