Sebastian Class

COMMENTS: Initial All-County selection … The 5-foot-8, 145-pounder was nearly invisible in 2016 as a rusher. He toted the ball 12 times for 19 yards. His longest run was nine yards. QUOTE: “Sebastian had a really good season. He’s the type of runner who can break off long runs … His biggest strength is he doesn’t lose speed with his pads on. A lot of times that happens with track kids who try to play football; that’s not Sebastian’s case … He had more than 200 all-purpose yards in the spring game … He needs to put on some more weight and be able to run through some tackles in the future.”

Hernando – Senior

Dalton Peters

COMMENTS: First-time All-County pick … Filled in at various positions for the Leopards … Listed at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds … Caught one pass in 2016 and 2017 … Ranked tied for sixth in tackles in 2016 with 40 … In 2017, ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 74, highlighted by 11 TBLs, one pass breakup and one interception … Peters also lofted 11 punts for the Leopards and led the local circuit with an average boot of 33.7 ypk … Was never blocked and rooted two kicks inside the opposition’s 20-yard line.

QUOTE: “We used Dalton is so many different ways … When we were struggling at receiver, he came in and solidified the position; same on defense when he played linebacker … As a punter, he had no negative plays, which is huge. He’s a steady guy, he’s such a hidden weapon … We’re gonna miss his steadiness and his ability to get the job done at outside linebacker and wide receiver, too. There aren’t many guys who can play multiple positions without a complaint – that’s Dalton.”

Vonada

Special Teams Player of the Year – David Hale Bronson

Hernando – Junior

David Hale Bronson

COMMENTS: Three-year letter winner and a multi-sport/athlete… Repeat All-County football selection also lifted weights (is a 2018 Hernando County champion) and played baseball … Listed at 5-foot-8, 160 pounds … After suffering through an injury-riddled freshman campaign, Bronson returned kicks and led the Leopards in rushing (632 yards), receiving (27 grabs), receiving yards (339) and scoring (11 touchdowns, 66 points) in 2016 … After shoulder surgery last spring, Bronson finished fifth on the team in 2017 in rushing (344 yards), tied for the lead in receptions with Ygenio Booker with 11 and continued to return punts and kickoffs to be named Hernando County’s Special Teams Player of the Year.

QUOTE: “The great thing about David Hale is whatever side of the ball we put him on he’ll make plays … He’s explosive … He’ll continue to get his touches … We’ll spell him on defense. He’s not just a running back, he’s a great football player.”

Vonada

Coach of the Year – Bill Vonada

Hernando – 4th Year (19th lifetime)

Bill Vonada

COMMENTS: Vonada guided the Leopards to a 7-3 mark in 2017 and the school’s fourth-ever district crown … The SHS alumnus was named Hernando County Coach of the Year for the sixth time (2003, 04, 05, 10, 12, 17) … He’s one of only five local mentors to win a pair of district championships (2012, 17) and the only local skipper to garner district titles at two Hernando County programs (SHS and HHS) …Vonada recently stepped down from HHS departing as the Hernando County record holder in most games coached (192), most wins (97) and most losses (95).

QUOTE: “Obviously this honor is very humbling … We played some great teams and I was fortunate to have such a great staff … Most journeys are not a straight path. At the end, it’s more about who enjoys the meal the more? … I’m sorry (Mike) Einspahr wasn’t here for the fourth year. I was real fortune to be surrounded by a great (coaching) staff.”

Vonada

Mike Garofano

QUOTE: “Bill really deserved it … He went through a lot to win the district championship … His success always goes back to his character and development of his players … He worked his butt off to get that program turned around; no one deserves this more than him.”

Garofano

QUOTE: “With Vonada I saw what this (job) is all about. In his rebuilding job at Hernando, he was going to do it the right way … Since I’ve known him, he’s become a great mentor to me.”

Gray

QUOTE: “Hernando had a pretty decent year … They lost a couple of close ones at the end … Bottom line, they won their district … They out-performed their expectations.”
