113 – Richie Rivera

Springstead – Senior

Richie Rivera
Richie Rivera

COMMENTS: Competed for three seasons … Only completed one full season due to academic issues … First-time All-Hernando County selection in 2016-17 … Unanimously voted Wrestler of the Year after returning home with Hernando County’s 47th state gold medal in 45 seasons … Broke in as a frosh in 2013-14 posting a 16-11 mark before falling behind in his studies … After relocating to California to live with his mother, he moved back to Spring Hill for his junior year … Notched 14 wins in 18 bouts before negatively impacting his academics … Was a different cat as a senior … Rivera dominated throttling 46 of his 50 opponents (county-best 92 percent) … In county-leading eight IBTs (individually bracketed tournaments), Rivera medaled all eight times … He placed fifth in the ultra-tough Knockout V, placed runner-up at Kiwanis and runner-up at Ippolito (to eventual 1A state champion Ryan Chauvin of Lake Highland Prep) … Captured a county-high five gold medals … Pieced together the county’s longest win skein at 29 straight wins until Chauvin bested him, 11-2, at Ippolito … Closed out his best-ever season in impressive fashion going 10-0 during his first district, region and state series … En route to the top of the podium, Rivera solved Brandon High sophomore and defending state champion Trey Lane twice, including in the 2A FHSAA State Finals with his personal-best 21st pin of the season in 5:06 … With his efforts, Rivera became Springstead High’s 30th state champion … Remarkably, Rivera achieved the feat while his father Richard was in an Osceola County hospital after suffering a severe stroke on the first night of the state finals … Rivera departed with 76 wins across 95 bouts (80 percent) behind 40 pin falls.

QUOTE: “He’s the county’s only state champion. How could he not be our best guy? … He placed in every tournament we went to … Most importantly, he conquered all the adversity he‘s ever faced and graduated on time.”

Springstead’s Bob Levija

Dan Gigantelli
Dan Gigantelli

QUOTE: “Becoming a state champion is the ultimate goal … To win states in your first attempt is unbelievable … Not only do you have to be in the zone in that building, you’ve gotta want it … For most guys, it takes their heart, soul and mind just to get there … Only a handful of people could ever tell you what it’s like to be a state champion … Winning this year under those conditions (father in a hospital), tells you something about how his dad raised his son … Under those types of situations, most athletes wilt or melt rather than being extraordinary.”

Weeki Wachee’s Dan Gigantelli

QUOTE: “He’s been a stud since I’ve seen him … He got his stuff in line and did so under stressful circumstances … When he was on the mat, he was always calm and cool.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

QUOTE: “It really speaks volumes about Richie the person on how he won states by keeping his composure … He’s had a lot of adversity … Deep down, his father really wanted Richie to win this and he used that to his favor … I’ve always said that if he was in shape no one could touch him … What I liked most? That he was hungrier.”

NCT’s Mike LaRocca

QUOTE: “What Rivera did, especially under those circumstances, was inspiring to all of us … I know everyone I spoke with told me their thoughts an prayers were with him and his father … He’s a special kid …Winning like that says something about his mental makeup.”

Central’s Willie Murphy

COMMENTS: Second-season on the mats … First-time All-Hernando County pick … Entered the varsity lineup late in the 2015-16 season and finished a non-descript 6-12 with two pins … A year later, McCane emerged as a rising force … In all, he won six times as many matches than the year before (37) … He registered wins across 76 percent of the 49 bouts he competed in … Seasonal highlights included capturing his first district title during the Class 2A, District 5 Meet at Inverness-Citrus … He followed that performance up with a 3-2 effort in the “Region of Doom” at Brandon placing fourth … In his initial Class 2A State Finals, McCane departed after a 1-2 run.

QUOTE: “He beat some good wrestlers this season … Had his best-ever season.”

Springstead’s Bob Levija

120 – Josh Hulse

Hernando – Junior

Josh Hulse
Josh Hulse

COMMENTS: Third-year varsity grappler, who came into his own this winter … First-time All-Hernando County selection … Arrived in 2016-17 with modest credentials … Finished a quiet 3-9 as a freshman in 2014-15 … Improved to 31-10 as a sophomore, featuring 14 pins … Broke out behind a stellar 44-12 run this past winter (79 percent), highlighted by 15 pins … Hulse finished fourth in the county in victories … He carved out his initial district championship and regional titles … Was Hernando County‘s lone 1A-II champion in Titusville … After earning his first-ever trip to the FHSAA Finals, Hulse was promptly bounced from the Silver Spurs Arena following a 1-2 effort … Enters his fourth season with a 78-31 (72 percent) career ledger with 31 pins.

QUOTE: “Had a great year, but a bad state tournament … Probably our most improved wrestler since he’s been out here .. He’s super tough to score on …He’s unorthodox on the mat; it works for him … He never panics … He’s mastered that style … He’s definitely our leader … He’s a quiet guy, who leads by example … He has a short memory, he doesn’t dwell on what happened at states.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

126 – Yovanny Rodriguez

Hernando – Senior

Yovanny Rodriguez Photo by Joseph DiCRISTOFALO
Yovanny Rodriguez                                                                                      Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

COMMENTS: Third mat season … First-time All-County mat pick … To see where Rodriguez has come, he compiled a combined 35-37 slate in his first two seasons … In 2016-17, Rodriguez enjoyed his best-ever campaign mounting a 35-14 run with a personal best 14 pins … In the post-season picture, Rodriguez was one of five Leopards to tote home Class 1A, District 6 first-place blue ribbons … In regionals in Titusville, Rodriguez lost to Bishop Moore’s Jake Wheeler in the Blood Round, 4-3, to miss advancing to states by one win.

QUOTE: “Yovanny missed a match away from states … He was so super consistent this year … He’s a really good kid off and on the mats … I love coaching guys like Yovanny.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

COMMENTS: Four-year letterman … 2½-year varsity starter … First-time All-Hernando County selection … Broke in finishing 3-6 as a freshman in 2013-14 … Improved to 33-24 as a sophomore behind 17 pins … Competing during the second half of his junior season, Ellerbee hoisted a 18-15 mark with 15 pin falls … Closed the season with his first-ever trip to states, where he finished 1-2 … The stars were in alignment as a senior … Ellerbee responded with a personal best 45 wins across 60 bouts (75 percent) … He also notched a career best 28 pins … In districts, he placed as high as runner-up before qualifying for states behind a third-place finish in Titusville … At Kissimmee, Ellerbee stuck Nick DeSota of Del Ray Beach-American Heritage in 3:45 for his 100th career win … With the effort, he became the 22nd Leopard in 45 seasons to collect 100 career wins … He dropped his last two matches in Osceola County to finish 1-2 … Across 160 career bouts, Ellerbee finished 100-60 lifetime (63 percent) behind 61 career pins.

QUOTE: “Had a great career … Was a two-time state qualifier … He’ll tell you he didn’t reach his goals, he came up a little short … He’s been a staple of our program for four seasons.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

138 – Chris Morales

COMMENTS: Moved in from New Jersey … First-time All-Hernando County selection … Athletically gifted … Super quick on his feet … Is a takedown machine … Terrific rookie campaign notching 35 wins across 44 matches (80 percent) … Finished runner-up at Springstead Invitational before capturing his first-ever IBT during the 2A-5 Tournament at Citrus High … Next, he went 5-1 at Brandon’s “Region of Doom” to place third … At states, he finished 2-2.

QUOTE: “He’ll be our next state champion … Gifted athlete … Next season will depend on how hard he works.”

Springstead – Junior

Charles Roche vs Colby Singletary PARI.Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO
Charles Roche vs Palmetto Ridge’s Colby Singletary.                               Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

COMMENTS: Two-year letterman … One of 13 first-time All-County selections … Exceptionally gifted athlete … Martial arts background has served him well … When Roche and Chris Morales were on the mats during the same tourney, SHS excelled … Roche took to wrestling like a duck to water in 2015-16 … In his first season on the mats, Roche turned heads garnering 39 wins in 53 bouts (74 percent), behind 26 pins … After capturing his first district championship, Roche lost twice in overtime in the “Region of Doom” to be eliminated from the post-season picture … This last winter, Roche followed up with a 33-10 run (77 percent), amplified by 16 pins … Down the stretch, Roche placed fourth at Brandon’s Ippolito Memorial Tournament, garnered his second 2A-5 gold medal at Inverness-Citrus before punching his ticket to the FHSAA State Finals with a solid 4-2 fourth-place finish in 2A-II again at Brandon … In Osceola County elite meet he finished 2-2.

QUOTE: “Could be a state champion if he was a little more dedicated … He’s got a lot of talent … Needs to put in more time on the mats.”

Springstead’s Bob Levija

152 – Codey Maniates

Hernando – Senior

Codey Maniates Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO
Codey Maniates                                             Photo by JOE DiCRISTOFALO

COMMENTS: Four-year letterman, rare four-year starter … First-time All-County selection … Broke in 2013-14 sporting a 12-22 slate … Improved to 28-13 as a sophomore … As a junior, Maniates began to make a name for himself winning 43-of-58 matches, while notching 27 pins … His junior season concluded with a brief stay at states going 0-2 … As a senior in 2016-17, Maniates collected a personal best 48 wins across 57 bouts … He led all Hernando County grapplers with 48 wins … Seasonal highlights included his initial district championship in Brooksville in 1A-6 … A week later, he finished 3-1 in regionals to earn a silver medal in Brevard County … In his second Class 1A FHSAA State Finals, Maniates finished 2-2 … Codey departs the HHS program with a stout 131-59 (69 percent) career record, highlighted by 70 pins … His 190 matches tied the school record set originally by Brandyn Kuhn (2003-07) … His 131 wins ties him for sixth place all-time with Michael Combs, Jesse Graham and Zach Pritz … After the season, Maniates signed a letter of intent to compete collegiately beginning next fall for McMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois.

QUOTE: “Codey was a dominant wrestler … He didn’t have things go his way at states … Never skipped a work out and was a leader on the team … There aren’t many guys who start as freshmen, but Codey did … He’s one of the toughest kids I’ve ever coached.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

160 – Jordan Gibson

Nature Coast Technical – Senior

COMMENTS: Fourth-year letterman … First-time All-County selection … Pieced together an outstanding senior campaign … Paced the Sharks in wins (41) and tied with Shawn Manuli in pins (26) … Became a two-time district champion with his Class 1A, District 6 title at Hernando … Followed up with 4-1 run at Eastern State College in Titusville to place third in the rugged Class 1A, Region II and earn his first-ever trip to the FHSAA State Finals … In Kissimmee, Gibson walked in as one of 19 grapplers representing Hernando County … He departed as one of two reaching the coveted medal podium placing fourth … Gibson, who finished 31-47 across his first two seasons on the mat, closed with an outstanding 93-17 slate across his last two seasons … Departed NCT with a 124-64 career mark (66 percent) … Totaled 67 pins … Became the first-ever Shark to bag consecutive district championships in 13 mat seasons.

QUOTE: “I knew he could place at states, the key was reaching the semis … Congrats on being a state placer; it’s a big deal … Opened the season well by beating the kid from Pasco, then didn’t place at George Jenkins … I asked him do you want to be known as a four-year wrestler, who never went to states? … From that point, his mind shifted … He only lost to the top echelon kids down the stretch.”

NCT’s Mike LaRocca

170 – Travis Williams

Springstead – Senior

COMMENTS: Fourth season on the mats … Second full campaign … Is the lone repeat All-Hernando County selection from the year before … He entered 2015-16 with a pedestrian 12-19 won-lost record with five pins … T.J., as his teammates and friends call him, turned heads with a breakout 41-20 run as a junior, highlighted by a personal best 16 pins … He strung together a season-best nine straight wins during the NCT Combs Duals … Seasonal highlight was capturing his initial IBT gold medal during 2A-5 Tourney in Marion County, solving Citrus’ Willie Wallen, 8-1 … A week later in the 2A-II’s “Region of Doom” Williams stuck New Smyrna Beach’s Sonny Bertram to advance to his first FHSAA State Finals … In Kissimmee, Williams finished 41-20 behind a 1-2 effort … In 2016-17, Williams turned up the heat, claimed 43 wins across 52 bouts (83 percent) … He also notched a personal best 19 pins … In his best-ever campaign, Williams rolled up IBT titles at Kiwanis and Springstead Invitationals … Down the stretch, he placed fourth at Ippolito before claiming his second straight 2A-5 crown at Inverness-Citrus … Went 3-2 at always-tough Brandon’s 2A-II Meet to advance to states for second straight winter … Unfortunately, he did not finish any better in Kissimmee than he did the year before at 1-2 … Departed the Spring Hill program just short of 100 career wins at 96-48 lifetime (67 percent).

QUOTE: “One of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had … Always did was he was told … He’s an overachiever … He used everything he had to win matches.”

Springstead’s Bob Levija

182 – Harry Williams

Hernando – Senior

COMMENTS: Multi-sport athlete, who played football for the Leopards … Was named All-County defender in 2016 … Competed for three seasons on the mat, the last two as a starter … Named All-County in wrestling in 2016-17 … Williams broke in as a sophomore with an 0-for-2 cup of coffee … In his first full season in 2015-16, he emerged sporting a fine 32-26 slate with 21 pins … Reached states for the first time by placing runner-up in 1A-II at Eastern State College … Went 1-2 during his first visit to the FHSAA State Finals … Sizzled as a senior … Williams mangled his opponents, collecting 42 wins across 54 bouts (78 percent) … He also paced the county pins falls (30) … Seasonal highlights include placing runner-up in districts and third in regionals to advance to states for the second straight season … In the Osceola County elite meet, Williams returned home after a 1-2 run … In two-plus seasons, Williams compiled a 74-40 slate (65 percent), featuring 51 pins … He signed a letter of intent to wrestle next season for Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

QUOTE: “For a three-year wrestler, he went to states twice … He allowed a lot of the guys to lighten up … In practice, he was never a problem, he kept everything light-hearted … Ability-wise, he hasn‘t touched his athletic ceiling … I hope it works out for him at the next level.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

195 – Trenton Shenefield

COMMENTS: Initially, he played football and he wrestled … Completed his third season on the mats … First-time All-County selection … Shenefield opened as a freshman with a 6-9 part-time record … In 2015-16 in his first full-time campaign, he didn‘t raise many eyebrows mustering a 17-25 season with nine pins … But in his third season in 2016-17, he “got in the barrel” under Coach Levija … In a breakout season, Shenefield notched 32 wins across 42 bouts (76 percent), while collecting 14 pins … He began to surge during the late stages of the season … At Ippolito, he made a name for himself placing third behind a tidy 5-1 run … In 2A-5 in Citrus County, he dissected the top seed Michael Porcelli of Citrus, 10-1, to earn first place … During the “Region of Doom” at Brandon, Shenefield was at his best claiming a rare regional title behind a 4-0 run … After earning his first trip to FHSAA State Finals, Shenefield sputtered closing 1-2.

QUOTE: “Trenton was probably the biggest surprise all season … He really bought in and success followed.”

220 – Michael “Mike-Mike” Weston

Nature Coast Technical – Sophomore

COMMENTS: Multi-sport athlete, who also stood out for the Sharks’ football team … Was voted All-County at running back in 2016 … First full season at the varsity mat level and he tore it up … The 6-foot, 220-pound brick quit the squad after a cup of coffee going 1-1 in 2015-16 … This season, Mike-Mike finished 35-15 (70 percent) and compiled 24 pins … He claimed his first-ever district championship at Hernando High’s Michael A. Imhoff Gymnasium … In regionals in Brevard County, Weston went 4-1 with two pins to place third and qualify for his initial FHSAA State Finals …. In Osceola County, he closed out a fine season among the state’s best at 0-2.

QUOTE: “He is raw talent … If Mike-Mike puts his mind to the sport, he’d be an animal … He probably just turned 16 and is getting bigger by the moment … Off the mat, he’s a really a nice kid … His biggest strength? His raw power … He’s like farm strong. He has natural God-given strength … Year 3 will depend how much he buys into the program.”

NCT’s Mike LaRocca

285 – Keegan O’Rourke

Hernando – Senior

Keegan O'Rourke
Keegan O’Rourke

COMMENTS: Two-sport athlete, who also lined up along the Leopards’ offensive line … At 6-foot-1, 260 pounds, he filled in nicely when Robert Graves graduated in 2016 … In his lone varsity season on the mats, O’Rourke collected 33 wins in 51 bouts (65 percent), behind 24 pins … His seasonal highlight reel featured his 11th-hour pin at Springstead to enable the Leopards to edge SHS, 39-30 … In his first and last district tourney, he was crowned champion … Advanced to Titusville’s 1A-II Meet, where he was eliminated after a 2-2 run.

QUOTE: “For a first-year guy, he had over 30 wins … He was especially important during the dual-meet portion of our schedule … He did well.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

COMMENTS: The wrestling Hall of Famer came out of retirement to guide the Eagles for a 23rd season … He also did so without any pay … Levija infused a Spring Hill program to narrow second-place finishes in the Kiwanis Invitational in Brooksville to Tampa-Robinson and Belleview Duals to Tallahassee-Lincoln … Under Levija, SHS placed fifth in the St. Cloud Duals and finished third at Ippolito behind eventual state champions Lake Highland Prep and Brandon … Levija collected his Hernando County leading 68th and 69th championship trophies at the Land O’ Lakes Duals and Class 2A, District 5 Tournament at Inverness-Citrus … The district title was Levija’s county record 19th and Springstead’s 30th in 37 mat seasons … The Mariner Boulevard mat men placed third in the rugged 2A-II at Brandon and closed out the season with a county-leading 12th place finish in the 2A State Finals in Osceola … When Richie Rivera accepted Springstead’s gold medal at 113 pounds, he was Eagles’ 30th state champion and Levija’s 10th.

QUOTE: “I took a young team and brought seven guys to states and five will be back next year … We competed in some pretty tough tournaments … I’m most proud of how we improved as the season progressed.”

Levija

Mike LaRocca
Mike LaRocca

QUOTE: “Coach Levija took over a team on short notice … We’re all trying to get state champions and they got one.”

Hernando’s David Pritz

QUOTE: “It took some stones to come back from retirement and coach up a program for the first time in what 15-16 years … He did a nice job in guiding the ship … He just went back to the basics and got the program running again … He realized his stuff works … Him coming back to coaching shows just how much he cares about the program he originally built from the ground up.”
